Bruna Costa is an experienced Researcher in Life and Health Sciences. She completed the PhD in Biomedical Engineering (2024) at the Faculty of Engineering (FEUP), the master’s degree in Functional Biology and Biotechnology of Plants (2018), and the degree in Biology (2016) from the Faculty of Sciences, all from University of Porto (UPorto). Her research emphasis is on Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Medical Biotechnology, Biomaterials, and Nanotechnology areas. To perform her PhD studies, she received a highly competitive PhD fellowship from the Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT), to support the studies conducted at THE UPorto and the University of Navarra, Spain. During her PhD, B. Costa explored antimicrobial peptide-based coatings to fight orthopedic infections, providing new insights for developing alternative therapeutics to fight resistant bacteria. Her studies were validated in vitro and in vivo settings, having high application potential in the medical area. During her time abroad, she experted in studying the synergism between antimicrobial peptides and antibiotics to treat bacteria/biofilms. B. Costa has extensive experience with natural polymers (chitosan, cyanobacterial polymers), antimicrobial peptides and antibiotics, polymeric materials (polyurethane, PDMS), and wax, applied to different fields, in particular in the medical area, and is very proficient in antimicrobial activity and biofilm assays. B. Costa author of 5 peer-reviewed articles published in Q1 international journals and 1 book chapter. She has actively engaged in different national and international R&D projects and several technology transfer programs. B. Costa has participated in science outreach activities and has participated in several national and international conferences as a participant (total of 16 oral presentations - 8 of them international and 12 poster presentations- 4 of them international) and as a volunteer in the conference's organization. Over the years she has also received several awards and/or honors recognizing both her scientific merit, as well as her communication skills, including a prize of 3 K€ by AstraZeneca Foundation. Alongside her research activities, B. Costa was robustly involved in Laboratory Sustainability projects & activities, as a member of the I3S GreenLab Initiative steering group in 2022, as volunteer from 2020-2023, as a helper to write Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF) certification proposals. Furthermore, B. Costa was part of the coordination team of the GO4GREENLAB project supported in 3.5K€ by the European University Alliance for Global Health (EUGLOH), where 5 European Universities are involved, and is Ambassador of My Green Lab program. B. Costa has experience teaching both at undergraduate and MSc/PhD levels, as Assistant Professor (2024) in Escola Superior de Sáude, Politécnico do Porto. At the beginning of 2024, B. Costa joined the research group Biotechnology from LEPABE, FEUP, a team with several research projects funded by the European Commission and FCT. Nowadays, her research activities are focused on biofilms, particularly with applications in the medical (mainly biomedical devices and implants), water, and environmental sectors.
