SERGIO FERNANDEZ BOO

Sergio Fernández Boo have finished his PhD in 2015 at the University of Santiago de Compostela within a thesis focused in the interaction between Perkinsus olseni parasites and Ruditapes spp. clams. This thesis allowed the identification of several molecular markers of resistance to the disease and also to corroborate the Asiatic origin of the disease. After that, he joined the European Reference Laboratory for Mollusc Diseases at IFREMER - La Tremblade in France as a postdoc researcher. During this stay, he studied the mechanisms of infection of protozoan parasites in the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis. Then, he accepted a position as reasearcher at CIIMAR into the project INSEAFOOD. During this time, he evaluated the immune status and population size of sea urchin in the Portuguese coast. Also, he participated actively in the research activities of the group and in 2018, he obtained a FCT project called CRAGIAMP as Principal Investigator. The next year he was also awarded with a second project, TOOLS4BREED financed by Fundo Azul Foundation. He also participates in an European Project financed by H2020 funds called AQUACOMBINE. All projects are related with Blue and Green Economy, improvement of invertebrate health and productivity and also, minimization of diseases in marine molluscs. During his career, he has guided several Bsc and Msc students and now is supervising 3 PhD students. He also participates in the scientific committee and chairman in international meetings such as the European Association of Fish Pathologies biannual meeting and Blue Think Conference annual meeting. Up to date, he manages a small team with one hired master students who is working in Tools4Breed project, one MsC and one BsC student hired by CRAGIAMP project, and three PhD students. His area of interest is focused in the discovery of molecular markers to develop breeding programs in mollusc in order to improve disease resistance and growth to minimize the economic losses and revitalize the local economy in coastal areas. Also, in the last two years 2 European projects have been awarded in the group, namely GRINNAQUA and IGNITION, in which a major role in writing, management and WP leader was done. During the last 5 years at CIIMAR organization, Sergio Fernández Boo has demonstrated research autonomy, always with the help of the group "Animal Health and Aquaculture" and he has formed a small group working in mollusc diseases. Finally, Sergio is also adviser in a Crustacean production facility in Spain and invited professor in two universities such as Universidade Federal da Viçosa (Brasil) and Bharathiar University (India), and he is also collaborating in the applied course "Pathologies and Malformations in aquaculture species" given by FOR-MAR (Centro de Formação Profissional das Pescas e do Mar).
