I graduated in 2002 from University Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologia, Lisbon and I completed my PhD (2010) in Biochemistry from Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica (ITQB NOVA). During my PhD in Biochemistry I have focused in the study of enzymes from the multicopper oxidases family, namely CotA-laccase from Bacillus subtilis, in particular in the structural and functional characterisation of key properties of these enzymes: redox potential and copper loading. In 2010, I joined the group of Hayer-Hartl at Max-Planck Institute of Biochemistry, Munich, Germany, for my first postdoctoral position. My research focus was the engineering of Rubisco (ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase), the key enzyme that catalyzes the fixation of atmospheric CO2 in photosynthesis. By the end of 2014, I joined Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) under the supervision of Dr. Isabel Gordo to study which evolutionary mechanisms allow for the maintenance of bacterial antibiotic resistance. I have used a broad range of molecular biology and microbiological techniques to study fitness effects of resistance (and compensation) across environments and epistasis in between resistances in E. coli. I have authored 20 papers (one of them as an Eterna participant) in peer-reviewed international journals (Google scholar times cited: 1199, h-index: 16), 3 invited lectures and several poster communications at national and international conferences. I have collaborated in several projects as team member, supervised 8 students and was awarded several fellowships. I have also been a reviewer for 14 journals and I was involved in several outreach activities, including the "Pint of Science" in 2018 or the organization of the "3rd European Meeting of OXIZYMES" held in Oeiras, Portugal (7-9th September 2006). I am currently an Auxiliary Investigator at ITQB NOVA where I combine basic and applied research to contribute to the solution of the drug resistance problem by pursuing fundamental and applied projects in parallel. At the fundamental level I intend to reveal the mechanisms involved in bacterial acquisition of resistances to human medications taken to treat or ameliorate human diseases and which act unintentionally as antibiotics in our gut microbiota. The applied research is focused on the sustainability problem of finding applicable solutions to tackle the growing antibiotic concentrations and consequent accumulation of antibiotic resistant bacteria in the environment.
