During my BSc in Cellular and Molecular Biology (FCT-UNL), I developed a strong multi-disciplinary background encompassing several biological/biochemical sciences, ranging from biological molecular interactions and regulation of metabolic and signalling pathways to biotechnology. The practical training of my BSc presented several laboratorial techniques necessary for scientific research. My MSc in Biopharmaceutical Sciences (FF-UL) was a great opportunity to dissect several molecular mechanisms associated to disease progression. Further, it allowed me to further focus my studies in Neurosciences, while gaining insights in state-of-the-art biology and biochemical techniques and disease modeling. In fact, my MSc thesis was dedicated to the investigation of the therapeutic properties of endogenous anti apoptotic bile acids in Alzheimer’s disease. During my PhD, where I was actively engaged in deciphering the potential of targeting necroptosis as a prospective therapeutic option to treat Parkinson’s disease pathogenesis, more specifically regarding dopaminergic neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation. Presently, I am investigating how different intracellular AMPK pools can modulate mitochondria-ER contact sites, and what are the resulting functional consequences.
