I completed my PhD degree in Ecology from the University of Coimbra and University of Kiel in 2010. My research focuses on marine animal ecology, particularly the study of the foraging strategies and ecological roles of seabirds and other apex predators, of wider trophic relationships in marine communities. I'm interested in understanding how these apex predators respond to global change and other marine Human-related stressors. I already made significant contributions to this field through a broad suite of publications, and in building a wide network of national and international collaborators. I have gained diverse field and analytical expertise which allows me to apply powerful techniques such as stable isotope analysis, biologging, ecosystem modelling and advanced statistical procedures to address a wide range of key and highly topical ecological questions. I published 115 manuscripts in international peer reviewed journals with 2300 citations (citations in the last 5 years = 1900; h index = 34). Several works were published in major multidisciplinary scientific journals like Global Change Biology, Proc R. Soc. B (2 papers), Scientific Reports (2), Div. & Dist., Ecology, Ecography or Oecologia. 97% of publications on journals of the first quartile and 12% publications in top-tier journals (i.e. top 10% in their field). From all publications, 35% were published as First Author, 40% as Senior Author and 85% with co-authors with foreign affiliations, showing a high degree of internationalization of my research. I supervised 13 PhD and 47 MSc thesis in Ecology. Since 2015, I'm associate editor of Marine Biology, J. of Applied Ecology, PLoS ONE and Frontiers in Marine Science (220 edited papers in total) and I'm regular reviewer for 75 journals. Since 2010, I lecture classes on Biological Conservation, Conservation and Biodiversity Management , Science, History and Politics of Climate Changes, and Evolutionary Biogeography and Spatial Modelling" to Biology (BSc level), International Master in Applied Ecology, Ecology and Marine Biology and Global Changes (MSc level) and Biological Sciences (PhD level) courses at the University of Coimbra. I regularly participate in outreach actions directed to secondary school students, for instance FCTUC Lab @ school or UC summer university. Much of my work was made in collaboration with conservation NGOs (e.g. BirdLife International), Governmental Institutions (e.g. IPMA Fisheries Division) and foreign Universities (e.g. University of Barcelona). The logistics to develop such work were mostly obtained through my involvement as scientific consultant and team member on EU LIFE (e.g. Marine IBAs, MarPro, Recover Natura, Berlengas, Ilhas Barreira), INTERREG (FAME), H2020 (PADDLE; H2020-MSCA-RISE-2016) and private funded (MAVA foundation) projects. I¿m currently PI (as partner) on the EU LIFE Ilhas Barreira, H2020 PADDLE and MAVA projects (7.26 M¿ in total).
