I am a biomedical scientist with a passion for biology and global health. I hold a BSc Honours in Human Biology from the University of East London, where I achieved an upper second class degree in 2018, and produced a dissertation titled ''The role of GABAB antagonist CGP54626 in conditional preference assays in Drosophila melanogaster models, with development of Arduino analysis''. During my studies in London, I was a volunteer for an organization (Anthony Nolan), for the recruitment of potential bone marrow donors to find matches for blood cancer patients. I have an MSc in Biomedical Sciences from Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical (IHMT-UNL), concluded in 2021 with distinction. My MSc final thesis - titled ''Protective effect of red blood cell pyruvate kinase deficiency against malaria - is there a role for the host cell membrane?'' - was awarded a merit prize. My academic and research experience includes working on malaria control through host-directed therapies, resulting in a poster presentation at a conference in 2020 (NOVAhealth Chronic Disease and Infection) and two published research articles (at Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology - Morais et al. 2022 -, and at International Journal of Molecular Sciences - Carvalho et al. 2023). I also presented our work at a Tropical Medicine Congress, in Lisbon. I am also a peer reviewer for PLoS since 2022. From 2022 to 2023 I worked as a Superior Technician in a malaria research group at IHMT (project: REPELMALARIA_MOVAM) focused on entomology, where I processed field samples of mosquitos and blood, and performed molecular analysis by Real Time quantitative PCR to detect and study malaria infection patterns. I alwas try to keep engaged in learning, and have recently completed three short courses: The Art of Science Communication from IHMT, An Introduction to Humanitarian Action, and Response to Humanitarian Emergencies, both from La Cooperativa Humanitaria. Currently, I am a PhD candidate at IHMT, in Tropical Diseases and Global Health, working on the potential manipulation of the mosquito's microbiome as a transmission-blocking tool against malaria. Keywords: infectious diseases, plasmodium, malaria, parasitology, host-directed therapies, global health, entomology, vector control, transmission-blocking, microbiome, molecular biology, humanitarian impact and science communication.
