He received his doctorate in April 2001 with the Cum Laude qualification and obtained the Extraordinary Doctorate Award. He has published 186 research papers in international journals, most of them included in SCI. The main contribution of Dr. Guerra lies in the discovery of 8 genera and 62 new species for the science of caprellid crustaceans (Amphipoda). He has demonstrated the utility of these amphipods from the applied point of view: the caprellids are excellent bioindicators of the environmental quality of the marine ecosystems, and they are also an alternative resource very useful in aquaculture, Their high nutritional content (omega 3) makes them suitable as food for fish and molluscs of commercial interest. Several works carried out by the applicant show that they constitute an alternative resource to Artemia, misidacea, etc., which have traditionally been used in aquaculture and are very expensive. In fact, this discovery has allowed to develop 2 patents based on the lyophilisate of caprelids as fish feed. Recently, his research is also focused in the detection and assessment of invasive crustaceans, both in freshwater and marine ecosystems. Dr. Guerra has presented 141 communications in national and international scientific congresses (19 of them have been by invitation). He has participated in 18 research projects (2 international, 6 European, 4 of the National Plan, 2 of the Autonomous Community and 4 through companies or public administration). He has made 20 stays in foreign research centers, 7 of them long-term (highlighting Japan and Australia) and other 12 short stays in reference centers around the world. He has received the Young Researchers award granted by the Royal Academy of Seville Sciences and the Manuel Losada Villasante award in recognition of his outstanding research career. He has supervised 6 doctoral theses (and currently directs five more), 7 undergraduate theses, 1 master's thesis and 2 DEAs. He has participated as a scientific reviewer of more than 150 international articles, and as an ANEP evaluator of projects and integrated actions of the National Plan and of projects of the BBVA Foundation.
