Salomé Pinho graduated in 2004 in Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M) by the University of Porto and completed a PhD degree in Biomedical Sciences at the same University in 2009. She developed her PhD research from 2006 to 2009 in cancer glycobiology at the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of University of Porto (IPATIMUP) and at Boston University Medical School, MA, USA. Afterwards, she performed her postdoctoral work at IPATIMUP in glycobiology and glycoimmunology fields. At present, she is Principal Investigator and Coordinator of the "Immunology, Cancer & GlycoMedicine" research group (https://pinholab.i3s.up.pt/) at i3S (Institute for Research and Innovation in Health, University of Porto). She is Professor at Faculty of Medicine of University of Porto and School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University of Porto. For more than 15 years, her research activity has been focused on the understanding of the role of post-translational modifications by glycosylation in the regulation of key proteins´ functions involved in cancer and in chronic inflammatory conditions, envisioning potential clinical applications. The mission of Pinho lab is to work at the interface of immunology, tumor biology and glycobiology, using a multidisciplinary approach that combines unique cellular and animal prototypes of disease further validated in human patients. The group has a multidisciplinary background being composed of highly motivated biochemists, biologists, clinical investigators that in straight collaboration with centre hospitals share the common long term goal of performing translational research as well as preclinical and clinical validation of rational biomarkers and therapeutic strategies in inflammation, autoimmunity and cancer. Salomé Pinho is author of more than 49 publications published in international peer-reviewed journals being the first/ senior author in papers published in top journals including Nature Reviews Cancer, Gastroenterology, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Oncogene, Cancer Immunology Research, Science Translational Medicine, among many others. She is the Principal Investigator(PI) of several grants in the field of glycobiology, cancer and inflammatory diseases funded y national and international agencies in highly competitive calls, including Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT); the Crohn´s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) ; the European Crohn´s and Colitis Organization (ECCO); the AbbVie international pharmaceutical company as well as by the U.S.A. Department of Defense. She is the coordinator of a project funded by the European Union within the Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Actions, and was awarded with an ERC Synergy grant. She received several prizes and awards such as the Young Investigator Award from the European Association for Cancer Research (EACR); the 2020 Glycobiology Significant Achievement Award by the American Society of Glycobiology and the Pfizer Award 2021 for Clinical Research. She is inventor of 2 patents. Salomé Pinho is the Chief Science Officer (CSO) and Co-founder of the spin-off GLYCO4CLINICS.
