Liliana Marisa Vieira da Silva Azevedo
LILIANA AZEVEDO holds a PhD in Sociology (Iscte - University Institute of Lisbon, Portugal). Her thesis is focused on the
return migration of Portuguese migrant couples to Switzerland at the time of retirement. She approached the issue of return
and non-return migration from a threefold perspective of gender, life course and transnationality. From 2018 to 2022, she
was awarded a PhD scholarship by the FCT, the Portuguese national agency for scientific research (Ref: SFRH/BD/128722/2017).
During this period, she was also an associate doctoral student of nccr - on the move (National Centre of Competence in Research
-The Migration-Mobility Nexus) where she completed the Certificate in Migration and Mobility Studies ( 30 ECTS).
In 2023, she was awarded a Swiss Government Excellence Grant to carry out a postdoctoral research at the University of Neuchâtel
on transnational families and the impact of retirement return migration on the descendant who stay behind.
She is currently a researcher at CIES-Iscte and an associated researcher at the Emigration Observatory (OEm), Lisbon. She
is also cocoordinator of the seminar series 'Meetings on Migratory Experiences', a joint initiative of CIES-Iscte and CRIA,
and a member of the Cost-Action CA21143 - Transnational Family Dynamics in Europe.
She has presented her research in several national and international conferences, notably at IMISCOE, ESA, SSA, NGC, APS,
APA. She also has co-organized several national and international scientific events.
Her main research interest are return migration, gender, ageing, transnational families, lifecourse, home-making, biographical
approach and visual methods.
