Margarida Espada is currently a member of MED (Mediterranean Institute for Agriculture, Environment and Development at University of Évora, Évora, Portugal). In 2012, she was awarded with a PhD grant funded by the Portuguese Government (FCT) (2013-2017) and finished her PhD in Biology at University of Évora in 2018. Her PhD thesis was a joint project between Portugal and Scotland (The James Hutton Institute), where she worked for more than 8 months, improving knowledge and skills (e.g.bioinformatics/transcriptomics). In 2020 was awarded with a 6-years Junior Researcher contract. Her main research interest is in molecular basis of plant-nematode interactions, functional characterisation of parasitism proteins (effectors) of plant-parasitic nematodes and understanding their roles and how parasitism is regulated. The main technologies use includes molecular and reverse genetics, genomic and transcriptomic approaches. M Espada has been author of Q1 peer-reviewed scientific publications, book chapters and attended several national and international conferences presenting her work in oral and panel communications and participated in international scientific networks. Supervised/co-supervised PhD, MSc and several undergraduate students. M Espada is the Principal Investigator of an ongoing project (2022) and participated in several scientific projects (scientific team and/or fellowships). M Espada has specialised in plant pathology, nematology, transcriptomics, molecular and cell biology.

Plants (2023): Plant pathogens (i.e., viruses, bacteria, fungi, nematodes, and insects) can cause huge crop losses with evident economic impacts. At present, we face several challenges such as population growth, climate change, and limited resources. Sustainability strategies worldwide (e.g., the European Green Deal under the Farm to Fork and Biodiversity Strategies and 17 ONU Sustainable Development Goals) emphasize the importance of a resilient agri-food sector and an efficient use of natural resources. To meet these challenges, plant protection represents a key factor in order to develop efficient strategies for disease management. Plant pathogens vary, affecting pathogenicity strategies to overcome plant defenses. For the success of plant protection it is essential to be one step ahead of these pathogens. This is possible by understanding how these infectious agents interact with their hosts, vectors, other pathogens, and the environment. We must also predict how all these drivers will respond to climate change, which can increase disease severity as well as lead to pathogens spreading into new areas..
