Diana Fontinha is currently a Post-doctoral Researcher at the Prudêncio Lab of Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes. She has concluded her PhD on Biomedical Sciences with a specialization in Microbiology and Parasitology in 2016 by the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon, her MSc degree in Molecular Medical Microbiology in 2010 by the University of Nottingham, and her Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics in 2009 by the Faculty of Science, University of Lisbon. She has published 46 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, is an inventor in a patent, and has received 5 awards. During her academic path, she has worked with different host-pathogen interactions, comprising viruses and parasites. Her research interests focus on host-pathogen interactions, with particular emphasis on malaria. She is interested in the development of antimalarial strategies, particularly prophylactic options, including drugs, vaccine candidates and monoclonal antibodies. On the first topic, she has focused on the search and application of newly developed drugs, as well as on the repurposing of drugs that are employed in the management of communicable and non-communicable diseases, towards malaria. In this line of work, she has accompanied several MSc and PhD student internships on the screening of compounds against Plasmodium liver stage infection. She has further supervised a Master Thesis project on drug repurposing against malaria parasites. She has been awarded an exploratory project by FCT to carry out the characterization of the antimalarial activity of ivermectin hybrids and has supervised a Master Thesis on that subject. Furthermore, she is interested in the development of new platforms for the study of this host-parasite interaction and on their application for evaluating novel compounds against Plasmodium liver stages. On the second topic, she is interested in the evaluation of novel vaccine candidates that can potentially confer protection against the neglected human malaria-causing parasite Plasmodium vivax, and is currently supervising a Master Thesis on that subject. Regarding the last topic, she is interested on the development and application of antimalarial monoclonal antibodies as prophylactic alternatives for specific target populations.
