Joana research is focused on the study of grapevine proteases related to defence response against downy mildew disease, combining genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic approaches. With special focus on subtilases, Joana has performed several studies to elucidate the involvement of this serine proteases in grapevine defence strategies. Also, Joana have been working on the characterization of the grapevine apoplast proteome in order to identify the key players in the grapevine-downy mildew interaction. Joana major aim is the establishment of subtilases as strong candidates for breeding programs, as an alternative to the use of pesticides in grapevine disease control.
