Ana Fortunato has a degree in Biochemistry (1996) by Faculdade de Ciêncais, Universidade de Lisboa and a PhD in Bologia (2006) by Universidade Nova de Lisboa. She is a researcher at ITQB NOVA. She published 20 articles in journals and 2 book chapters. The main focus of her research is the assessment of the response of plants (mainly crops) to environmental stresses (drought, cold, heat, salinity,...) through an integrated approach that includes physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology. She was the principal investigator of the project "VitiRoots: The emerging role of miRNAs in Vitis rootstocks drought response" and is the co-PI of the project "FilliGRAIN-PROTECT ¿ Using the power of plant signal-integration to protect grain filling from stress". She is also involved in science dissemination activities for the general public, along with the training of primary and secondary school teachers, with the aim at promoting experimental activities in the classrooms. She was the coordinator of the ITQB team of the European project "3S: Science Starts at School" (2017-1-PT01-KA201-035823) and at the present she coordinates a second project "Full STEAM: an approach to science teaching in non-formal settings" (2021-1-PT01-KA220-SCH-000030430). More recently, she began collaborating as a science consultant in several science clubs running in schools in the municipality of Oeiras.
