Positions: Diogo Caetano is the head of the Advanced Sensor Interfaces and Circuits group at INESC Microsystems and Nanotechnology (INESC MN) since September 2021, as well as the co-founder and manager of FLASH, a deep tech startup, – resulting from his PhD research – which has its focus on producing infectious disease diagnostic devices based on nanotechnology. Diogo has been an Invited Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) since 2021. Education: Diogo holds an M.Sc. (2011) and Ph.D. (2021) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico. His Ph.D. was on the topic “Circuits and Signal Processing for Magnetoresistive Sensor Arrays” which he developed at both INESC MN and INESC Investigação e Desenvolvimento (INESC-ID). As a result of his work, he received the Born from Knowledge award (2017) from Agência Nacional de Inovação (ANI), and the eAward (2022) from NTT Data and was runner-up for the EIT Health RIS innovation award, all in the biosignal detection areas. Before enrolling in his PhD studies, Diogo worked as a junior researcher and analogue circuit designer at INESC-ID from 2012 through 2016, where he designed and fabricated five integrated circuits (ICs) for several different projects (11% of all the circuits fabricated by INESC through Europractice 1995-2015). He has now been involved in 13 IC tape-outs containing more than 20 different IP blocks. Teaching Activities: At IST as an Invited Assistant Professor, he teaches in the courses of Circuit Analysis (LEEC), Technologies of Computing Systems (MEEC), Electronics (LEFT/MAero), and Electronic Systems (MEEC) offered by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC), and further tutors in the course Laboratory of Experimental Physics in Research Units from the Physics Department. He was/is the supervisor of 21 M.Sc. theses (8 Ongoing), 3 BSc final projects, and 15 internships at INESC MN (2 Ongoing, 5 with grant), and is currently the supervisor of, 1 Postdoc Researcher, 2 Researchers with contract (MSc) and co-supervisor of 2 Ph.D. student. From his projects since 2022 he employs/ed a total of people, 5 with work contracts. Research: His research is mostly focused on interfaces and signal processing for sensors applied to industrial and medical applications. He started his work in neural interfaces; an area which he is now returning to with his current work in wireless and power transfer for implants, monolithic CMOS/memristor devices for neuromorphic computing, brain-machine interfaces, and machine learning. His research also extends to diagnostic devices for bio-analyte detection (bacteria, CTCs, DNA, etc.) applied to the health and food safety areas. Furthermore, he has worked on systems for industrial applications in Non-destructive Testing, current sensing, position encoders, and triboelectric nano-generators for wearables and implants. Since 2012, he has participated in around 20 national and international research projects and contract. He is now involved in 3 PRR projects at INESC MN totalling a budget of 2M €. He is/was the PI (at INESC MN) of the PRR “Aliança para a Transição Energética” coordinated by EFACEC and with an INESC MN budget of 1.2M € for the development of sensors and systems for the next generation of power metering, and of 3 research projects in HORIZON-KDT-JU where he is the country coordinator, the EIT Health RIS Innovation and the UNITE Seed Fund calls totalling around 2M€ in funding. Publications: He has published 1 patent, 8 journal papers, 2 book chapters, and 15 publications in conference proceeding with peer review.
