Cláudio Carlos da Silva Horas is a Structural Engineer currently conducting his scientific career as a postdoctoral researcher at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). He is an integrated member of the Institute for R&D in Structures and Construction (CONSTRUCT). With multiple publications in leading international peer-reviewed journals, his research focuses on the structural analysis of railway bridges and vehicles, and multiscale fatigue assessment. He has developed global-local fatigue approaches to predict the remaining service life of aging bridges. His tools have made a tangible impact in the industry, with the Portuguese Infrastructure Manager adopting them as a guideline for analysing the Portuguese railway bridge stock. Currently, he is advancing two main research lines: i) Integrating multiscale approaches enhanced by Artificial Intelligence techniques to implement local fatigue methods in digital twin architectures; and ii) exploring green multi-material strengthening strategies to maximise the fatigue life of critical details, exploring 3D printing with additive manufacturing to produce structural materials, including the development of fatigue resistance models to be incorporated into the multiscale approaches (i). In 2011, after completing the MSc in Civil Engineering at FEUP with a final grade of 17 out of 20, and defending his MSc thesis titled "Dynamic Behaviour of Bridges with Precast Decks on High-Speed Railways" (graded 19 out of 20), he started his professional journey as a Structural Engineer at Adão da Fonseca, Eng. Consultores (AdF). During this industrial experience from 2011 to 2015, he honed diverse skills, contributing to the design of high-rise buildings, bridges, and special structures. Between 2015 and 2021, Cláudio Horas was a PhD student at FEUP, completing his doctoral studies in 2021 with the defence of his dissertation titled "Integrated Methodology for Fatigue Life Prediction of Existing Metallic Railway Bridges", which was approved with distinction (Cum Laude). Following this, he began his career as a postdoctoral researcher. Specialisations: Railway structures; Fatigue assessment; Structural dynamics; Global-local analysis; fatigue strengthening.
