Mirela Rodrigues Ferreira

I, Mirela Ferreira, completed my Bachelor Degree in Biomedical Sciences on July 7, 2016 at the University of Beira Interior, then I enrolled in the Master Degree in Microbiology on September 15, 2016 at the University of Lisbon - Instituto Superior Técnico. During my Master Degree, I was awarded with an Academic Merit certificate and an Academic Excellence certificate. Between January and September 2019, I participated in a project called "Burkholderia cepacia complex respiratory infections in cystic fibrosis". On September 1, 2019, I have the opportunity of started my PhD in "Biotechnology and Biosciences" at the University of Lisbon - Instituto Superior Técnico. My PhD project focuses on the study of genetic mechanisms involved in the formation of cellular aggregates of Burkholderia multivorans. These structures have environmental and clinical relevance, especially in patients with Cystic Fibrosis. During my PhD project I was able to spend 6 months abroad at the Cooper's Lab in the University of Pittsburgh. This experience was very important for me, since gave me the opportunity to discuss science with distinguished scientific researchers and also provided me different resources to develop my research. So far, I published 2 journal articles and 1 book chapter. During all these years, I participated in several scientific events, such as the International Microorganism Day. In some of these events I made part of the event organization. Between November 23 and 27, 2021 I participated in the Microbiotec congress and more recently, in September of 2022, in the 2nd IBB Workshop. In both I was able to presented a poster. Last year, I was invited to be part of a non-profit organization - TreeTree2 - where I helped build a Molecular and Cellular Biology course for the After School project. This project is a platform to teach students.
