Albina Franco has a BSc in Microbiology (2002), an MPhil (2009), and a PhD in Biotechnology (2014). In her career, Albina Franco (h-index = 18) delivered 76 indexed publications and over 1020 citations (Scopus citation metrics). In the last five years, Albina Franco has been cited over 750 times. She co-authored 20 papers, with an accumulated impact factor of 79. 16 of the 20 papers were published independently of the PhD supervisor. She has also delivered 30 presentations, among them orals and posters, and received the 3rd Best Poster Prize Award (2012). She has been invited to review manuscripts from over 11 different international journals from the most reputed publishers, including Elsevier and MDPI. Albina Franco is a junior postdoctoral researcher at the ICVS/3Bs Associated Lab's 3Bs Research Group. Her research centered on the development of drug-free natural-derived polymers with biological functions to create biomedical devices with intrinsic multifunctionality and enhanced structural properties. Her current research interests include the design of materials derived from the exceptional properties of spider silk proteins and fused with molecules with biological functions, notably antimicrobial properties and wound healing, along with their processing utilizing advanced manufacturing methodologies. Her expertise and skills in genetic engineering, microbiology, chemistry (purification), and industrial biotechnology acquired during her MSc and PhD were essential to the development of these materials and paved the way for increasing current knowledge on the use of recombinamer materials for tissue engineering. Albina Franco has collaborated with Tufts University (US) since 2014 to design smart spiders to develop smart drug delivery systems and coatings with a focus on preventing surgical infections. She was a visiting scholar at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Tufts, working directly with Professor David Kaplan between 2014 and 2015. This collaboration has so far resulted in 14 publications, a news article in Material Today, and a nomination for a young researcher award at TERMIS-EU17. Since 2014, Albina Franco has participated in 10 nationally funded projects totaling about 2.5 million euros, one of which is SPYPATCH (PTDC/CTM-CTM/2844/2021) as the principal investigator and a coordinate team member. Under these projects, Albina Franco has mentored 4 students—2 MSc and 2 PhD—and led teams comprised of MSc and PhD students, a junior researcher, and an assistant researcher (hiring under process) on these projects. Since 2017, she has been an invited lecturer at the Doctoral Program in UC Biocompatibility in Tissue Engineering at ICVS/3Bs, lecturing about biomaterial-associated infections and characterization techniques. Furthermore, she was invited to argue MSc defense juris. She is also responsible for the microbiology laboratory at ICVS/3Bs (2017) and is responsible for training and mentoring young researchers and post-doctoral researchers (20). Besides, she mentored 4 international visiting PhD students, 8 graduate trainees, 4 MSc students, 3 PhD students, and 1 post-doc researcher. Currently, she is tutoring high school students as a scientific adviser for their final-year project on unraveling the potential of marine bacteria to express recombinant proteins. Two almost simultaneous maternity leaves disrupted Albina Franco's career and research. Her high-risk pregnancy and the subsequent difficult birth procedure influenced her first maternity leave, which lasted from October 2017 to June 2018. Her outcome performance and research activities were seriously hampered by her second maternity leave, from August 2019 until December 2019, and by global constraints caused by the emergence of the coronavirus influenza D (COVID) (working remotely from home because schools closed for isolation and the ongoing need to provide physical and emotional support to her two children).

  1. Phytomanagement of Cd-contaminated soils using maize (Zea mays L.) assisted by plant growth-promoting rhizobacteri. Zea mays (L.) is a crop widely cultivated throughout the world and can be considered suitable for phytomanagement due to its metal resistance and energetic value. In this study, the effect of two plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria, Ralstonia eutropha and Chryseobacterium humi, on growth and metal uptake of Z. mays plants in soils contaminated with up to 30 mg Cd kg-1 was evaluated.
