Jorge Lima is Head of R&D and Vice-Director at Ipatimup. He is also Associate Researcher at Ipatimup-i3S and Affiliated Professor at FMUP. Jorge's research focuses on understanding the oncogenic properties and inherent biomarkers of adult and paediatric brain tumours. He is also interested in the crosstalk between altered metabolism and the oncogenic properties of cancer cells. His work has provided important insights for the role played by metabolic enzymes in inherited neoplasias and the effects of mitochondrial deficiency in cancer cells. Jorge studies brain tumours and he contributed to understand the role played by IDH and TERTp mutations, identify biomarkers of therapy resistance, test novel delivery methods and investigate the metabolic features of stem-like cells. He is also particularly dedicated to paediatric brain tumours and in translating their genomic features to the clinical practice, by creating a fruitful collaboration between Ipatimup and the departments of paediatric oncology of 4 reference clinical centres in Portugal - CHUSJ, IPO-Lisboa, IPO-Porto and Hospital Pediatrico de Coimbra. Besides research, Jorge is also Molecular Diagnostics Consultant for adult and paediatric brain tumours at Ipatimup. Jorge is currently PI of 4 projects, 3 of them specifically dedicated to CNST. He has supervised 5 Msc and 3 PhD students to completion, and he is involved in several teaching activities. He has been leading collaborations between i3S/Ipatimup and international institutes, such as Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Weill Cornell Medical College, Wurzburg University and Heidelberg University. Jorge is a member of the board in ASPIC (Portuguese Association for Cancer Research), coordinator of the Paediatric Cancer Working Group in the National Cancer Hub (Portugal) and integrates the Paediatric Oncology Tumour Board at CHUSJ and IPO-Lisboa. He has co-authored >50 peer-reviewed publications, with >3000 citations and a H-index of 23.
