Irene Martins holds a PhD in Ecology and is an expert in Coastal Ecology and Marine Ecosystem Modelling. Her main research interest is to develop numerical models for coastal and marine systems to study and predict the effects of multiple stressors (climatic changes, pollutants, plastics, invasive species and others) on the composition and function of those ecosystems. She participates in research work gathering multidisciplinary teams, composed by modellers, ecologists, ecotoxicologists and oceanographers, to develop numerical frameworks to study marine ecosystems dynamics and support environmental risk assessment (ERA) and coastal risk assessment (CRA). She has participated in more than 20 R&D projects either as PI or team member. She was a lecturer in Marine Ecosystem Modelling at the School of Oceans Sciences (University of Bangor, UK) and lectured courses on Ecological Modelling in Portuguese and Brazilian Universities. She supervised or co-supervised more than 25 students (including 6 PhDs) and is a guest editor for several publications scientific publications. Currently, IMartins has over 50 refereed scientific publications.
