I did my PhD (2013-2017) on the mating strategies of spider mites at the University of Lisbon (UL) under the supervision of Sara Magalhães (SM) and Isabelle Olivieri, from the University of Montpellier (UM). I then did an ERC-funded post-doc (2017-2019), working on the impact of population structure on the evolution of sexual conflict and sex allocation and on genetic correlations between demographic and reproductive traits. This work was done in collaboration with Alison Duncan, from UM. In 2019 (2019-2020), I moved to Stockholm University (SU) where I obtained a post-doc grant (Carl Tryggers) to work with Rhonda Snook on the impact of high temperature on fertility, using the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. By 2020 (2020-2023), I moved back to Portugal to explore the adaptation of spider mites to their host plants in the presence of competitors and metal pollutants, in the pursuit of contributing more significantly to agricultural sustainability. Following that same path, in 2023, I was awarded a CEEC to work at the UL on the evolutionary response of spider mites to multiple stressors, including heat stress, pesticide and novel host plants. So far, I have participated in 5 research projects (3 as collaborator, 1 as PI, 1 as co-PI) and 2 outreach/governance project (1 as collaborator, 1 as co-PI). I have authored 25 scientific articles (11 as 1st author, 2 as last author/supervisor), 3 working papers, and 1 book chapter, reviewed articles for 18 scientific journals (e.g., Journal of Pest Science, The American Naturalist, Journal of Evolutionary Biology) and have co-edited a special issue in Evolutionary Applications. My scientific work was disseminated in national and international conferences/meetings, of which 31 were posters, 35 oral presentations and 5 invited talks (work as first author or supervisor only), for which I have won 3 prizes for best communication. In addition, I co-organized a symposium in an international conference and belonged to the organizing committee of 2 national meetings and to the scientific committee of 2 national meeting. I have also engaged in several teaching activities: 1) I tutored 16 undergraduate and master students and 3 PhD students, and co-supervised 7 master students (2 ongoing) and 3 PhD students (ongoing); 2) I designed and lectured practical classes within a) one course integrated into the Biology undergraduate (2nd year) at UL , b) two courses of the Evolutionary Biology and Development Msc programme at UL, c) a MSc course on the ecological and evolutionary responses to climatic variation at SU; 3) I created a short course for undergraduates and an advanced course (PhD and postdoc level) about experimental design at UL; 4) I gave invited lectures on Sexual Selection within 3 courses integrated into the Biology undergraduate (2nd year) and the Genetics and Molecular Biology master (1st year) at the UL. I have collaborated in several activities of science outreach, being an active member of NEDE-APBE (Nucleus of Education and Science Communication-Portuguese Association of Evolutionary Biology) and I am engaged in projects with societal impact, as part of the core team of "Caravana AgroEcológica", an initiative with a participatory methodology that aims at strengthening the links between the actors of the food system through agroecology in Portugal and that has recently received EU funding (cf. GrowLIFE project). In the context of these activities, I have authored 2 scientific papers, 3 magazine articles, helped prepare 4 oral presentations and 1 poster, participated in several radio/podcast episodes targeting the general public and acquired funding from the ESEB (European Society of Evolutionary Biology) Outreach Initiative Fund to inspire the younger generations in pursuing a career in science. Finally, I represented for 3 years all MSc and PhD students from cE3c at the scientific council and I was part of the direction board of APBE between 2018 and 2022.
