The main focus of my research is the microbial dysbiosis on the airway microbiota of patients with respiratory diseases (RD) such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. We investigate how these bacterial communities differ between healthy individuals and patients with RD. We are particularly interested in understanding the causes of acute exacerbations and the mechanisms behind pulmonary rehabilitation success for RD. We approach both problems considering clinical, microbial and the immune aspects of large cohorts of patients (> 900) with RD. Another topic of my research concerns the study of microbiota evolution in the context of the aged intestine. To address this problem we use experimental evolution of labelled bacteria and a mouse model of gut colonization to infer the conditions the gut microbiota face in the elderly. I finished the PhD in 2008 at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon and graduated in Microbiology and Genetics by the same university in 1997. After a postdoc in the Gulbenkian Science Institute, in 2016 moved to Aveiro where currently I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Sciences and a Principal investigator at the Institute of Biomedicine (iBiMED) at the University of Aveiro.
