Érica Faleiro Rodrigues is an international filmmaker, curator and lecturer. Faleiro Rodrigues holds a BA (Hons) in Film and Video (Major in Fiction Film Directing) by the University of the Arts London and a Master of Arts in Television Drama (Specialisation in Fiction Film Directing) by Goldsmiths, University of London. She is a PhD candidate at Birkbeck, University of London, with the project "Women in Portuguese Cinema Before and After the Revolution: Representation and Reality", which has been the recipient of a PhD scholarship from Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia in Portugal. The social impact of her work as a documentary filmmaker granted her a Skillset Millennium Fellowship Award from the British Government for a series of documentaries on the role of art in the life of refugees in London. Amongst various roles in the film and television industry, Faleiro Rodrigues has worked as assistant editor for the BBC documentary series “Storyville”, produced by Nick Fraser. She has published several academic papers and chapters with Bloomsbury Publishing and others. Faleiro Rodrigues has taught Research Methodologies, as Associate Tutor, at the University of London, and as a Lecturer at Universidade Lusófona, in Lisbon. Faleiro Rodrigues has also taught as an invited lecturer at Universidade de Lisboa, teaching Film History and Film Practice units. She has also designed and delivered courses for the Universidade Nova de Lisboa’s Summer School programme, teaching film history, film practice and the history of moving image censorship. Faleiro Rodrigues worked as a film curator at the Barbican Arts Centre in London, collaborating with filmmakers such as Mike Leigh and Emir Kusturica, actors such as John Malkovich, and Nobel laureates such as Kazuo Ishiguro. In her work at the Barbican, Faleiro Rodrigues curated numerous exhibitions and installations by international filmmakers and visual artists. She curated the first silent film with “Benshi“ screening in the UK and organised a multitude of major film seasons with themes as varied as “Bauhaus”, “Radical Architecture”, Marcel Duchamp or Iánnis Xenákis. In 2017, Faleiro Rodrigues created “Underscore” in Lisbon, a festival that fosters the multiple relationships between the moving image, the archive, sound and music. Faleiro Rodrigues is the founding director of Utopia - UK Portuguese Film Festival, an event, supported by Instituto Camões, which is celebrating its 11th edition in 2020. The festival has been an important showcase for Portuguese film and visual arts in the United Kingdom, creating opportunities for the discovery of work by numerous authors, such as Paula Rego, Julião Sarmento, João Mário Grilo and Solveig Nordlund, amongst many others. More recently, Faleiro Rodrigues’s research has been focusing on the Audiovisual Essay, around which theme she organised a symposium in Lisbon in 2019.

2018/10/30 - 2018/11/29 UTOPIA - UK Portuguese Film Festival 2018 "Film and Music". For its 9th edition, the festival tuned into the complicity between film and music. It focused on this often neglected cinematic layer, showcasing several Portuguese composers and sound architects, and culminating with an inspiring junction of Portuguese silent film and British live music. The crown jewel was the screening of Portuguese silent gem "Lisbon, Anecdotal Chronicle", a film by legendary director Leitão de Barros, accompanied live on the piano by British composer Neil Brand. Underscore energised the creation of music and sonic art in close relationship with moving images and the archive, stimulating the debate at the intersection of these domains. Condensed into a week of multiple events and activities – cinema-concerts, discussions and workshops –, our aim is to progressively expand its scope, to build a forum for exchange and debate around the relationship between music, sound and moving images: a composition lab. 2015/11/17 - 2015/11/22 UTOPIA - UK Portuguese Film Festival 2015 "Women and Film". The Film Festival displayed this year an homage to Manoel de Oliveira and, as a counterpoint, a spotlight on the work of Portuguese women filmmakers. The aim was to bring to international attention recent strong work by female filmmakers such as Margarida Cardoso, Catarina Ruivo and Marta Pessoa. The crucial question we were asking and putting forward was how the work of these talented filmmakers has remained largely unseen and unacknowledged, both internationally and at home.
