Maria João Costa Novais

I earned my biochemistry bachelor's degree from the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro in 2012. I got the chance to research the expression of TGF-beta in cat breast cancer during this time, which resulted in a bachelor's thesis and an oral presentation at the IV Jornadas de Biologia at the same university. I wrote my master's thesis on the molecular pathways connecting the phosphorylation of the protein Bax to its activation during apoptosis for my Master's degree in Biochemistry Applied to Biomedicine at the University of Minho. A research work that I developed at the Institut de Biochimie et de Génétique Cellulaires (IBGC), CNRS at the Université Bordeaux Segalen during my 10 months participation in the Erasmus Programme. During my internship, I developed expertise in laboratory work, two posters at scientific gatherings, and an article in a peer-reviewed journal were published as a result of this research. As a research fellow at ISPUP, between 2017 and 2020, I worked as a researcher in the Geração 21 project, collecting information on the growth and habits of project participants. In 2020, I joined the fieldwork team of the study "Serological Tests for the search of specific antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 virus aimed at workers and students at the University of Porto", where I served as field team coordinator as well as database management and correction. The findings of this study were published in a peer-reviewed journal as "The SARS-CoV-2 infection among students in the University of Porto: a cross-sectional study". Since June 2021, I have worked as a technician to assist the project "Porto, Cidade sem Sida", and have begun contributing to the management and analysis of data, as well as the production of reports for the Lisbon Cohort of Men who have Sex with Men and the Community Screening Network. In 2023, I was awarded an FCT scholarship in 2023 to pursue a PhD under the program in Global Public Health. My main research interests lie in the epidemiology of HIV and Viral Hepatitis, especially in the frequently called most at-risk groups.
