João Mário Miranda is Assistant Researcher at the Transport Phenomena Research Center (CEFT), Chemical Engineering Department, Engineering Faculty, University of Porto. Current research activities are in the interface between fluid dynamics and biological applications. The main topics are biomimetic fluids, microcirculation, two phase flows in microdevices, fabrication of microparticles in microfluidic devices, hemodynamics, biofouling and cell adhesion. From 2016 to 2020 he was the coordinator of a FCT financed project to develop biomimetic particles and biomimetic fluids. The purpose of this project was to explore the design space of possible microparticulate suspensions which may have useful roles in biomedical engineering applications. It was possible to develop a transparent microparticulate suspension (the particles and the base fluid have the same refractive index) and a blood analogue suspension that mimics blood rheology at macro and micro scales. In 2021, he was awarded a CEECIND grant by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT) to develop a multidimensional blood analogue fluid for realistic in vitro experiments. In 2023, he started a FCT financed exploratory project aiming to improve blood analogue fluids to include oxygen carrying capacity. Other activities include the colaboration with other research groups in the developing of organ-on-chip devices, the study of biofilms in microfluidic devices, numerical simulation of flow and mass transport in biofilms and cell trapping.
