Prof. Manfred Niehus has built a career at the intersection of optical communication, quantum technologies, and space system engineering. His work bridges fundamental research and applied engineering. With a strong background in experimental physics, quantum optics, and system integration. Prof. Niehus continues to contribute to advancing quantum technologies and optical communication and precision sensing systems. He obtained his Diplom-Physik degree from the Universität zu Köln, Germany, in 1998, having spent an Erasmus year at the Faculty of Science, Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal, and completing his final-year thesis at INESC Lisbon, Portugal, as an FCT scholar. He earned a PhD in Physics from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal, in 2005, specializing in semiconductor physics and optical systems. Additionally, he pursued postgraduate studies in Optical Communication at IT Aveiro between 2009 and 2011. His professional journey spans both industry and academia. After briefly working as a Quality Engineer at Blaupunkt in Germany, he transitioned into research, focusing on wide-bandgap semiconductor projects from 2001 to 2007. Since 2002, he has been a lecturer at Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa (ISEL), where he has contributed to experimental and applied research in optical systems, quantum technologies, and metrology. He is now full Professor at the Physics Department at the Polytechnical University of Lisbon, Portugal.
