Mónica Faria is and Invited Assistant Professor in the Chemical Engineering department at Instituto Superior Técnico in the University of Lisbon. She is also auxiliary research scientist (2021.02844.CEECIND) at the Center of Physics and Engineering of Advanced Materials (CeFEMA), a R&D unit at Instituto Superior Técnico. In May 2012, Monica completed her PhD in Chemical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico and in June 2012 she became a Postdoctoral Researcher at the AORL - Artificial Organs Research Laboratory at Columbia University (New York, USA) where she initiated a project aimed at developing block-co polymer nano-porous materials for separation of biological cells. In 2013 she became the principal researcher of an ongoing AORL project dedicated to the development and testing of a portable, continuous ultrafiltration device for amelioration of hypertension associated with end stage renal disease and congestive heart failure. As part of this effort, she designed and conducted in vitro (bench) and in vivo (animal) studies. Monica is currently the Head of the Membranes, Chemical and Electrochemical Processes Group (MemChem) of the Center of Physics and Engineering of Advanced Materials (CeFEMA), an R&D unit of IST. She is currently the Principal Investigator of the Smart Membranes Engineering and Applications (SMEA) research group, which covers various research areas, including material formulation, membrane preparation and characterization, design and production of lab-scale devices, assessment of hemocompatibility, and prediction of mass transport properties, as well as membrane module design and configuration. As PI of SMEA, Mónica is responsible for designing, supervising, and reporting on the cutting-edge research conducted by her team, which is composed of a dynamic and diverse group of individuals Mónica's main research interests are artificial organs, transport and rate phenomena in biological systems, rate processes involving blood, extracorporeal blood circulation devices, polymer membrane synthesis for biomedical applications, hemocompatible nano- and micro- structured materials, biocompatible polymers, membrane separation and purification, surface modification and functionalization, blood flow behavior in microchannels. Since September 2021, Monica is an Invited Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at IST and lectures several Curricular Units at both the undergraduate and graduate levels of the Chemical, Biological and Materials Engineering, namely, Advanced Separation Processes, Transport Phenomena, Transport Phenomena II, and Project in Bioengineering and Nanosystems. Mónica has 2 patents, published 30 articles in high impact international peer reviewed journals, written a chapter for the Encyclopedia of Membranes and an article in the national board of engineers magazine. She co-organized an international workshop on Membranes in Medicine, a Session on Artificial Organs: Extracorporeal Blood Circulation Medical Devices in the 15th Mediterranean Conference on Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing and has given 3 Invited Lectures and 5 Keynote presentation at international conferences. She has also given another 24 oral presentations and 28 poster presentations at national and international conferences. Mónica is currently the supervisor of 1 post-doc, 2 PhD thesis's and 4 MSc thesis. She has supervised 22 MSc dissertations and 6 MSc international internships. She has received 5 awards and/or honors.
