José Pinela (JP) is Auxiliary Researcher at the National Institute for Agricultural and Veterinary Research (INIAV, I.P.), Vairão Innovation Hub, Portugal, and member of the Mountain Research Center (CIMO) of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB), Portugal. He holds a PhD in Sustainable Chemistry (2017) from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, and a BSc in Phytopharmacy and Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (2013) and a MSc in Biotechnology (2012) from IPB, Portugal. He studied at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, under the ERASMUS program (09/2009-02/2010) and completed a 3-month internship at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain (05/2016-07/2016), to obtain the title of European Doctorate. RESEARCH INTERESTS: Sustainable Food Crops and Production Systems (wild greens, local tomato varieties, microgreens, indoor vertical farming, soilless cultivation); Plant Biofortification and Food Quality (micronutrients uptake, translocation, and bioaccessibility, nonthermal food processing, food analytical methods); and Agri-Food Waste Valorization (bioactive ingredients, phenolic compounds, extraction methods, antioxidants). JP published >100 ISI-indexed papers (19 as correspondent), 10 book chapters, 3 editorials, and 9 conference proceeding. He has a national invention patent (117256) under evaluation. He is Editor of 1 eBook, Associated Editor for Frontiers in Nutrition (IF: 5.0), Guest Editor for Elsevier (Food Bioscience), Springer Nature (Discover Applied Sciences), Frontiers (Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems, Frontiers in Nutrition), MDPI (Agronomy, Antioxidants, Plants, Molecules, IJMS, Marine Drugs), and Open Exploration (JFF) journals. JP is team member of 5 international (3 PRIMA) and 9 national R&D projects and collaborator in 5 R&D projects. Supervisor of 4 PhD (ongoing), 10 MSc (2 ongoing), 1 BSc (ongoing) and 11 scientific initiation (1 ongoing) students, and 4 research project fellows (1 ongoing). Jury member of academic degrees (1 PhD, 13 MSc, 1 BSc), contracting contests, and technical-scientific competitions. JP review >270 scientific papers and evaluated 3 book proposals for Elsevier and project proposals for ANI-PT (2) and ANID-CL (1). Member of organizing, technical, and support committees of inter-/national conferences, and moderator/chair in 5 events. His results have been presented at national (>135 communication) and international (>100 communication) scientific conferences, but also at technical events with the community and potential users. He has been involved in technology transfer activities with business and public entities. At IPB. JP taught subjects related to Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Science, and Pharmacognosy. JP held leadership positions in the Young Chemists Group of the Portuguese Chemical Society (09/2018-10/2021) and in the Phytochemistry and Phytopharmacology Nucleus of IPB (12/2007-12/2008). Currently, he is involved in the managements of two curricular units of the "10% UP TO YOU!" operational model at IPB and is co-responsible for the "CIMO School" project. He also participates in activities to promote dissemination of scientific culture and knowledge.
