My entire professional activity has been focused in Gdansk University of Technology (GUT, Gdansk, Poland). However, along the way I have had also unique opportunities to work at European Institutions/Universities. Between 1988 and 1992 I was employed at the Department of Organic Chemistry at GUT. In 1990 I completed postgraduate studies in Instrumental Techniques in Footprint Analysis and Environmental Protection at GUT, and in 1992 I began PhD studies at the Faculty of Chemistry (GUT, Gdansk, Poland). However, I decided to continue my PhD studies in Belgium; so finally I am graduated from University of Gent in Belgium, in 1994. I defended at the University of Gent in Belgium in July 1995. Nostrification was carried out at the Faculty of Chemistry (GUT, Gdansk, Poland) in 1996. From 1996 to the present day, I have been employed at the Department of Analytical Chemistry (GUT); initially as an assistant (1995–1996), then as an assistant professor (1996–2009), assistant professor with postdoctoral degree (2009–2012) and since 2014 as a full-time professor of chemical sciences at GUT (Gdansk, Poland), working as an academic teacher and scientist. Except my two-years internship in Belgium, I completed a six-month internship at the University of San Sebastian in Spain financed by the Basque Government in the period from June 1997 to December 1997. Later, in the summer of 1999, I did a month internship at the University of Pau in France. I successfully combine scientific work with activities for University or organizations and institutions. Everything I do – I do for the clean environment, better food quality, eco-friendly technologies and good health for everyone. My scientific activity is focused on searching and developing new analytical methods. The main current of interests are modern analytical techniques with particular emphasis on combined techniques, among them modern, ultra-fast high performance liquid chromatography in combination with mass spectrometry, tandem mass spectrometry and high resolution mass spectrometry. At the same time, I am experienced in the preparation of liquid and solid samples prior chromatographic analysis. An important element of the research work is to recognize the kinetics of the degradation of the aquatic environment and identification of degradation products of organic pollutants enabling the determination of routes of degradation of pharmaceuticals. Recent scientific research focuses on lipidomics and metabolomics. Interestingly, untargeted lipidomics analyses of bacterial samples, making use of liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry, enabled to determine differences in the lipid pattern (amount and type of lipid species) among clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, including antibiotic-resistant and antibiotic-sensitive isolates. In fact, differences in the lipid patterns between sensitive and resistant S. aureus strains suggest that antibiotic susceptibility may be associated with the lipid composition of bacterial cells. The lipids that were found to significantly differ between antibiotic-resistant and antibiotic-sensitive clinical isolates are involved in the biosynthesis of major S. aureus membrane lipids and lipoteichoic acid. Thus, it indicates that S. aureus lipid biosynthesis pathways should be explored further to better understand the mechanism of antibiotic resistance in S. aureus strains. The knowledge gathered while characterizing the lipidomic composition of S. aureus clinical isolates has enabled to expand the established lipidomic analysis platform to other fields. For example, the analytical platform is presently being used to characterize the lipid content of human breast milk. Thus, the lipidomic analytical platform is suitable to investigate the lipid composition of several types of samples.
