Marta Susana Silvestre Gouveia Martins

Marta Martins (MM) is Associate Professor at the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (DCEA), NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT NOVA) (https://www.dcea.fct.unl.pt/pessoas/docentes/marta-martins) and Principal Researcher at MARE - Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre. Currently she is coordinator of the MARlab - Marine and Environmental Risk lab (https://sites.fct.unl.pt/marlab) and the Cell Culture Lab at DCEA, FCT NOVA. MM is certified by FELASA with the Laboratorial Animal Science level C for directing animal experiments and has a course on Applied In Vitro Toxicology by ESTIV and ASCCT. MM has a PhD in Environmental Sciences by FCT NOVA, a Master degree in Ecology, Management and Modelling of Marine Resources by the same faculty and a degree in Environmental Engineering. The Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) granted her PhD (2010-2014) and Pos-doctoral (2015-2018) fellowships. In 2009 and 2013, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation granted MM to support an internship at the NIOZ-Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, Texel, The Netherlands. Between 2002-2009, MM was a researcher at the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere, I.P. (IPMA, IP). The main research area is Aquatic Pollution and Ecotoxicology and Risk Assessment, focusing on the toxicological interactions of environmental pollutants (from chemicals to nano- and microplastics) to improve the basis of Environmental Risk Assessment Strategies and environmental sustainability. She works with both in vivo and in vitro models from aquatic organisms to human cells. MM is also interested on the development of new monitoring tools and new biomarkers. Her main technical skills are: genotoxicity assessment, RT-PCR, Western blot, gas-chromatography mass-spectrometry (GC-MS), enzymatic and non-enzymatic biomarkers, histopathology. MM has several scientific publications in the field of Environmental Toxicology/Ecotoxicology and Aquatic Pollution. She is/was involved in 32 national and international research projects, as Principal Investigator, Co-PI and member of the team. MM is/was supervisor of doctoral, master and undergraduate students. MM is editor of the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (1660-4601) and reviewer of several international peer-reviewed scientific journals. She is also member of the SETAC association and SETAC Education Committee, since 2019.
