Natércia Teixeira (NT) has finished her Chemistry PhD degree in December 2015. Her scientific research started with the study of the irrigation effect in the polyphenolic composition of grapes and the effect of different winemaking techniques in the polyphenolic composition of wines. NT first research grant was focused on anthocyanin isolation from wine by-products, and its use for the study of pyranoanthocyanins-chemical synthesis and physical-chemical properties. During her PhD, that included an internship at the Groupe Synthèse-Molécules Bioactives at Bordeaux University I, France, NT studied the synthesis of prodelphinidins, the tannin composition of Portuguese red vinho verde wines and the noncovalent copigmentation phenomena between oenin (an anthocyanin) and different polyphenol copigments. NT won a CEEC-Junior Researcher contract in 2019, in Agricultural sciences (CEECIND/00025/2018/CP1545/CT0009): Polyphenolic research: by-product exploration, interaction with metals and its application in environmental and technological fields. In 2023, NT won a new CEEC-Assistant Researcher contract, also in Agricultural sciences (2023.06024.CEECIND), with a project entitled "Primary sector waste and by-product valorization powered by cultural heritage". Her curricular path includes 35 scientific papers, 2 book chapters, 65 participations in science conferences (23 oral and 42 poster presentations), and 17 supervisions (BSc, MSc, Extracurricular Internship Program and Mentoring), including a 400h internship in a work context, promoted by Colégio dos Carvalhos. NT has been part of 6 SR&TD projects: Polyphenols in Art: chemistry and biology hand in hand with conservation of cultural heritage (PTDC/QUI-OUT/29925/2017), where she was the Co-PI and was involved in the study of polyphenolic extracts of gallnuts, reconstruction of historical manuscript recipes and characterization of the molecular structures of iron-polyphenol complexes present in iron gall inks; REVIVE: The threads of the past weaving the future: The colors from the Royal Textile Factory of Covilhã, 1764-1850 (2022.01243.PTDC), where she is responsible for HPLC-DAD/MS analysis of dyeing formulations and textile samples from the archives and/or historical reconstructions of the Royal Textile Factory dyeing recipes; VINOFLAVO (PTDC/AGR-TEC/2227/2012); VINE&WINE RESIDUES (PTDC/AGR-TEC/2789/2014); FoodNanoSense (PTDC/AGR-TEC/6547/2014); WINPUT (PTDC/QUI-OUT/29013/2017). NT organized 4 hands-on workshops on medieval recipes for preparing writing inks. In 2020/2021 NT volunteered for the Teaching Collaboration service, Chemistry Laboratory Subject (Q1013), 3h/week, responsible for teaching/evaluating one of the classes. In 2024, she signed a Guest Assistant Professor contract with FCUP. Since her PhD, NT has been focused: on the valorization of agro-food by-products/wastes by extract optimization and characterization of several polyphenolic families; the conduction and dissemination of the SR&TD project where she was the responsible Co-PI; deepen her knowledge regarding cultural heritage subjects; and the establishment of new collaborations and experimental protocols regarding the interaction between polyphenols and metals. Until 2018, her expertise subject were proanthocyanidins (non-hydrolysable tannins) and anthocyanins. However, since the R&D project Polyphenols in Art, she has been working with gallotannins (hydrolysable tannins). The project main goal was to study the molecular interaction between gallotannins and Fe, its kinetic and oxidation mechanisms and its effects on the ink color and conservation of ancient manuscripts. This project also engaged NT in cultural heritage areas of research. In 2022 she accomplished a 2-month internee at Nova School of Science and Technology in Almada, Portugal, working with chemists, conservation and preservation expert researchers. Member of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department Researchers' Committee, elected by fellows.
