Carlos Palmeira graduated in Biology from the University of Porto in 1988 and completed an MSc in Oncology in 1999. In 2010 he obtained a PhD degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Porto in collaboration with the Portuguese Oncology Institute of Porto (IPO-Porto). During his PhD he has developed and validated pre-clinical mouse bladder cancer models mimetizing human carcinogenesis features, stablishing an in-house tool for therapy development. He then joined the Immunology department of IPO-Porto as a Health technologist specialist in clinical analysis where he currently translates immune phenotyping into cancer patient diagnosis, follow-up and minimal residual disease evaluation. As a senior member of the Experimental Pathology and Therapeutics Group he has helped maintaining a flow cytometry platform to study immune-related biomarkers important for immunotherapy monitoring and address key roles played by protein glycosylation and other biological agents in cancer (60 publications in international per-review journals, 897 citations, H-index 16, i10 index 26). He has supervised more than 20 MSc students working on immunomodulation of oncological diseases. He has an Assistant Professor position at Fernando Pessoa University since 2011 where he brings insights on Histology, Anatomical Pathology and Oral Oncology principles. As a project leader, he currently manages international and national pre-clinical model studies of combined immune checkpoint inhibitors therapies with photodynamic therapy and laserthermia. Within the scope of his research group, he is involved in the study of the phenomenon of resistance to immunotherapy, namely by the evaluation of an immune profile associated with therapy response and the pre-clinical testing of combination therapies activating the immune system. He is also fostering the translation of glycan-based technologies into clinical applications based on onco-immunology strategies
