Jorge Almeida is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Coimbra (FPCE-UC). He is the founder and director of the Proaction Laboratory at FPCE-UC, and a member of the board of Directors of the Center for Research in Neuropsychology and Cognitive Behavioral Interventions (CINEICC). His research addresses the neural mechanisms that subserve object processing – from how we interact with and recognize objects, to how our conceptual knowledge is organized and represented in the brain. Recently, under his ERC ContentMAP, he has been focusing more on the dimensionality of representational spaces in the brain and on studying finer-grained object representations. Importantly, he is now showing that object-related dimensions drive topographical mapping in association cortex – what he calls contentopic maps (an analogy to retinotopic maps in early visual cortex; Almeida et al., 2023, https://doi.org/10.1101/2023.11.29.568856; second round of reviews at Nature Human Behavior). To address these issues, he uses a multimodal approach that spans fMRI, non-invasive neuromodulation (e.g., transcranial Direct Current Stimulation) as well as neuropsychological (i.e., the study of brain-damaged patients) and behavioral data. He has authored more than 65 publications, most of them in medium-to-high impact factor journals, including Current Biology, PNAS, Nature Protocols, Journal of Neuroscience, Cerebral Cortex, Brain Stimulation, Transactions on Medical Imaging, Neuroimage, Cortex, Scientific Reports, Psychological Science, Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, or Neuropsychologia, among others. In the last decade, he has been very successful in securing funding in excess of 5,5 MM euro. He is currently the PI of the first ERC grant, and the coordinator of the first ERA Chair grant in Psychology in Portugal, and has been the PI or Co-PI in more than 11 major national and international competitive projects. One of the aspects that has been central to his career is the supervision of young researchers in training. Currently, his group includes 5 post-doctoral researchers (has supervised a total of 13 in his career), 3 PhD students (has supervised 8 in his career) and 4 research assistants (has supervised many in his career). He has successfully supervised 5 PhD students - most of them currently hired in major international laboratories: e.g., Daniela Valério is a Post-Doctoral fellow with Stanislas Dehaene at Neurospin in Paris; Lénia Amaral is a Post-Doctoral Fellow with Ella Striem-Amit at Georgetown University, USA; Silvana Lopes Costa is an Independent researcher at The Kessler Foundtion, New Jersey, USA. He also has an extensive network of international collaborations that he coordinates with some of the most important researchers in the field (e.g., Brad Mahon, Yanchao Bi), and has attracted major researchers to Portugal (e.g., Ben Harvey, Alfonso Caramazza, Jason Fischer). He obtained several awards during his career (e.g., Investigator APPE Award; Elsevier/Vision Research Student Travel Award at VSS), and has been invited as a guest speaker at more than 30 conferences and universities around the world (e.g., Helmholtz Speaker at Utrecht University. He has also been a panel member at national funding bodies throughout Europe (e.g., Switzerland and Italy), as well as in EU funding Schemes (MSCA; ERC). He has been a fierce advocate for reforms in Psychology in Portugal, and for the importance of science literacy. Specifically, ha has thoroughly discussed the results of his research in newspapers and other media of international, national and regional circulation. Finally, since 2013 (when he was hired as an Assistant Professor at FPCE, he has contributed to educating several thousand psychology students, and has always strived to offer excellent research-based training that provides these students the necessary skills and competences to succeed.
