José Marcelino, who holds a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, is currently a researcher at the Institute for Drug Research (iMed.ULisboa), specifically in the HIV Evolution, Epidemiology and Prevention group. His main research objective is the humoral response to HIV-1 and HIV-2 infection, with a strong focus on the development of a universal vaccine. Marcelino has extensive experience in a range of scientific methodologies including the production of murine monoclonal antibodies, animal cell culture and the isolation and characterization of HIV-1/HIV-2 strains. He also has expertise in the expression, purification and characterization of HIV-1 and HIV-2 proteins, epitope mapping and the analysis of anti-HIV antibody binding and neutralization responses in various animal models and in humans. He has extensive experience of working in a BSL-3 laboratory. In addition to his research efforts, Marcelino has a strong commitment to education and has lectured at numerous courses and higher education institutions. His contributions to the academic world are further evidenced by his authorship and co-authorship of several scientific publications in prestigious international journals in the field of HIV. In recognition of his innovative discoveries, Marcelino was awarded with the prestigious Pfizer Clinical Research in 2012. The award was made in recognition of his pioneering discovery that HIV-2 resistance to neutralizing antibodies manifests in advanced stages of the disease and correlates with viral tropism for the CXCR4 coreceptor. Committed to training the next generation of scientists, Marcelino is actively involved in mentoring PhD, Master and undergraduate students. Currently, is the Principal Investigator of the project funded by Gilead, Portugal. This study aims to develop and evaluate a vaccine against HIV-1 and HIV-2 using mRNA encoding chimeric envelope glycoproteins derived from isolates of both viruses.
