Luísa Custódio graduated in Agronomy (1999, University of Algarve, UAlg, Portugal) and concluded in 2006 her PhD in Biotechnological Sciences (Plant Biotechnology, UAlg). Her first postdoctoral research, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, FCT), focused on using carob trees as a source of health-promoting products. Her passion for the ocean steered her towards a second postdoctoral project in CCMAR, targeting the bioprospection of marine organisms as sources of bioactive products, also funded by FCT. She was hired as an Assistant Researcher (2013) under the competitive FCT Research Programme. Since 2019, she has been a Principal Investigator at CCMAR under the FCT Individual Scientific Employment Incentive Competition. In 2018, she initiated her research group “XtremeBio” within CCMAR, developing research in Blue Biotechnology and the integrated use of halophytes for phytoremediation purposes and as sources of high-value products. She is the scientific brain behind “Bake My Dog Happy”, a UALg spin-off developing natural and functional pet treats. Luisa coordinated 9 national R&D projects on blue biotechnology and saline agriculture, is the Portuguese coordinator of an international research (PRIMA) project and participates in 4 COST actions. She participated as an evaluator of international scientific project applications and was a member of the FCT Competition evaluation panel for the Award of PhD Grants. She served as guest editor of special issues in her field and as a specialist in the Portuguese working group created by the Economy and Sea - Minister's Office to propose a set of competitive measures for the blue biotechnology sector and a model for the International Center for Blue Biotechnology. Luisa’s teaching activity includes more than 15 lectures, seminars, and workshops. She is currently a Senior researcher in CCMAR and invited assistant in the university of Algarve, responsible for the Curricular Unit “Sustainable bioprospecting of natural products” of an international master programme (IMBRSEa).
