I completed my PhD in April 2013. Currently, I am a Junior Researcher at the Centre of Biological Engineering (CEB) – University of Minho (UM), working in the bioprocess engineering field. I am an expert in a novel type of reactors (especially pressurized ones) applied to chemical and biochemical processes. I have vast experience in mass transfer and respirometry studies developed in stirred tanks and gas-lift reactors. I have vast experience in by-products valorization by yeasts and filamentous fungi under submerged and solid-state fermentation for the production of valuable compounds (microbial oils, microbial protein, enzymes, organic acids, etc.) within the biorefinery concept. I have also experience in syngas fermentation at moderate pressure by anaerobic mixed cultures for the production of biofuels (biogas) and liquid biochemicals. I am the Associate Director (2016 - ) of the Bioprocess and Biosystems Laboratory (CEB). I am an Invited Assistant Professor (2018 - ) at the Biological Engineering Department (DEB) and teach courses at the Master in Chemical and Biological Engineering and Master in Biotechnology – Oenology, Chemical and Biological Engineering Laboratories, Transfer Phenomena, and Food Technology Laboratories. I was an Invited Assistant Professor at Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo (2012/2013 and 2014/2015) - Introduction to Biotechnology and Food Biotechnology. I published 31 papers in international peer-reviewed journals (h=16), 1 book chapter, 12 full articles/extended abstracts in conference proceedings, 37 conference abstracts, 7 abstracts in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, and 1 patent application. I am the author of 57 communications at national and international conferences (25 oral communications, 32 posters), 1 keynote, and 6 invited lectures. I am the PI of the funded project Micro4Food (2022.01705.PTDC, ongoing) and have participated as a team member in 9 funded projects (2 ongoing). I supervised 4 Ph.D. students (2 concluded), 11 master students (9 concluded), 2 research grantees, 12 bachelor projects, and 6 master projects (all concluded). I have participated as a jury in 1 Ph.D. degree recognition, 2 scientific committees, 30 academic degrees (15 as arguer, 15 as supervisor), and 5 research grants (2 as president). I have participated in 17 activities of science dissemination in the field of Chemical and Biological Engineering. I have reviewed more than 70 papers for international peer-reviewed journals. I am the Guest Editor of three Special Issues: “Integrative Approaches for Sustainable Biofuel Production: Unveiling Key Contributors and Strategies” - Fermentation; “Advancements in Biomass Chemicals Transformation and Valorization” – Molecules; Microbial Lipids: Novel Advances and Applications” - Applied Sciences. I received 7 distinctions and awards.
