Since 2005, Rui Domingues has been dedicated to research in different institutions, building a multidisciplinary background in chemical engineering, material science, nanotechnology and tissue engineering. Rui Domingues is currently Assistant Researcher and Invited Assistant Professor of the Biomedical Engineering program at 3Bs Research Group, University of Minho, Portugal. He graduated in Industrial Chemistry and Management (2006), obtained a MSc in Materials Derived from Renewable Resources (2008) and a PhD in Chemical Engineering (2012) at University of Aveiro, Portugal, under the supervision of Prof. Carlos Pascoal Neto and Carlos Silva. He joined 3Bs as a Postdoc under Prof. Manuela Gomes and Rui Reis mentoring (supported by a Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT) Grant), where he has been working since 2013. During this period, he was a PostDoc at Prof. Nicolas Peppas Lab, University of Texas at Austin, USA in 2016. At 3Bs, Rui Domingues is/was the coordinator (e.g. SmarTendon, BioMIN and Wi-Pi) and had significant contribution for several EU and national funded projects (e.g. Recognize, ERC MagTendon and BioCHIPs) in which he is/was a work package leader or core team member. His research focus on the development of functional biomaterials for TERM applications, particularly exploring different nanostructured biomaterials for tendon tissue engineering and for studying cell behavior. His current research interests include the development of molecularly imprinted strategies to produce intelligent biomaterial, a filed in which he was awarded in 2020 with the highly competitive Individual Support from FCT Stimulus of Scientific Employment (CEEC) allowing him to establish this new research line at 3Bs (BioMIN and Wi-Pi projects). The high quality of the work developed by his team is reflected not only in the top ranked journals in which they have been published, but also by the number of citations that they received. His work has received more than 2300 citations, he has an h-index of 28 (WoS database, January 2024) and he has been listed in the 2023 Stanford/Elsevier's Top 2% Scientist Rankings. Rui Domigues has been awarded with several individual Grants and recognitions at the national and international level. He organized/chaired several symposia and presented numerous communications in prestigious international conferences (e.g. TERMIS, ESB, SFB, EORS), several as an invited/keynote speaker. He served in the Organizing Committee of Achilles conferences and EORS 2023. He is member of the Strategic Alliance Committee of TERMIS-EU, and Grant Awarding Coordinator and member of the Management Committee of COST Action TENET - European Network for Translational Advanced Regenerative Therapies for Tendon. He integrates the editorial board of International Journal of Bioprinting and of European Cells and Materials (both Q1 rank), was Guest Editor of Advanced Functional Materials of a Special Issues on Magnetic systems for regenerative medicine and is Guest Editor of Biofabrication for a Special Issue on Biofabrication in Suspensions Media for Tissue Engineering and In Vitro Modelling. He has been regular Evaluator of Research Projects for national and international funding agencies. At UM, Rui Domingues has supervised several MSc (6) and PhDs (2) students under national and international joint programs with e.g. University of Sidney (collaboration with Antony Wiess), University of Santiago de Compostela (collaboration with Pablo Taboada) and University of Pennsylvania (collaboration with Jason Burdick) as partners. He currently supervises 3 PhD students and mentors 1 PostDoc with distinct backgrounds in topics that include molecular imprinting, biofabrication and organ-on-chip technologies for tendon regeneration and modelling.
