I completed a first degree in physics (solid state physics and materials science) at the University of Porto in 1995. Shortly after I moved to Dublin where I started post-graduate studies on magnetism and solid state physics under the supervision of Prof. J. M. D. Coey. I completed my PhD. at the end of 2000 with a thesis entitled (Preparation, characterization and technological applications of half-metalic ferromagnetic oxides in ceramic and thin film form. Then I moved to Oxford University where I worked as a researcher with Prof. John F. Gregg's group at the Clarendon Laboratory. In 2003 I began a post-doc fellowship at the University of Lisbon and in 2007 I was awarded a "Ciência" (funded by FCT) contract with the same University. In 2012 I secured a position as lecturer and researcher at Universidade Federal Fluminense, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where I stayed until 2014. My years of work in physics were dedicated to the study of nanomagnetism in thin films and nanoparticles and the development of new magnetic materials. I published 34 articles in international physics journal that have more than 600 citations. I also worked actively on teaching and science communication. I participated in several sucessful research projects funded by the European Commission, FCT (Portugal) and FAPERJ (Brazil). In 2014 I decided for a carreer change, I entered the postgraduate Advanced Course on Public Administration and I joined the Directorate General for Energy and Geology in 2015. Since then I have been working on energy statistics and energy policy, but the center of my activity has been the development of mathematical models for final energy consumption and emissions (in particular for the road transport sector). In April 2022 I was appointed as consultant at PlanAPP where I have been working as an energy and foresight analyst. In parallel to my main job I keep pursuing my interest in the history and philosophy of science.
