Marta M. Rufino is a research in the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) and in the Centre of Statistics of the University of Lisbon (CEAUL) working on ecological statistics, namely on the underlying processes of marine communities and respective biodiversity, from a local scale using fisheries surveys data, to global scale using large databases. She handles large spatio-temporal oceanographic and environmental data sets and has 20+ years of experience in statistical analysis of ecological data using r, in particular spatio-temporal analysis, shape analysis (geometric morphometrics) and regularly collaborates in statistical modelling of paleoceanographic data. She has 43+ international publications Q1 (>50% as 1st author), 4 book chapters, and has participated in 20+ projects, being IPMA's contact point in an FP7 project where she was further a WP leader. Along her career, she participated in 9 oceanographic surveys and worked 7 EU fisheries institutes, the latest working in the development of spatial indicators for the MSFD at IFREMER-Nantes and in the world aquatic biodiversity modelling in MARE and has been a consultor of the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA). She works for 20+ years on small scale fisheries with Miguel Gaspar, namely on bivalve monitoring surveys, estimation of fishing effort (MONTEREAL), biodiversity, geometric morphometry, analysis of catches of SSF (FISH-CO) and on the DQEM coastal survey. Currently Rufino represents IPMA in the ICES groups WGECO, WGSFD, WGBIODIV and WGFBIT, having hosted the ICES hybrid Workshop on Geo-Spatial Data for Small-Scale Fisheries WKSSGEO. She has long track-record of science outreach, connections with media and lectures on workshops/pos-graduate courses about r statistical analysis and spatial data. Further, she founded the outreach group of IPMA (Mar dos Pequeninos, in IPMA-Escolas 2014-16) which involved coordinating 50+ volunteer researchers, 8 laboratories and has received 1495 first grades/pre-school students during two years to make lab experiments among others.
