My name is Verónica Manuela Roxo Felício. I hold a PhD in Biochemistry, with a specialty in Molecular Genetics, and have dedicated several years to research in the health sciences, namely with genetic respiratory diseases. I graduated with a BSc in Marine Biology and Biotechnology in 2009 from Politécnico de Leiria, and started an internship at the pharmaceutical company Atral. In 2012 I obtained a MSc degree in Biotechnological Engineering from Lusófona University, during which I started to work with Cystic Fibrosis in collaboration with BioFIG (presently BioISI) of the University of Lisbon. I integrated BioISI in June 2010, where I stayed until the end of my PhD in 2018. During my time at BioISI I developed research, coordinated and gave support to MSc students, lectured practical classes in BioISI workshops, and organized university events (such as “open day” and “European research night”). I also coordinated the volunteers for the 36th European Cystic Fibrosis Conference, held in Lisbon in 2013. My focus on both biochemistry and genetics allowed me to develop expertise in e a wide spectrum of technical skills. These include immunohistochemistry, western blot, cell culture, handling of biological samples, RNA and DNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, cloning techniques, High-Throughput Screening, iodide efflux, tests with libraries of compounds in cell lines and primary lung cells, and more generalized genetic, physiology and biochemistry analysis. I worked with Next Generation Sequencing, Sanger sequencing of DNA and RNA, and was responsible for Cystic Fibrosis diagnosis for 6 years. Working at BioISI also gave me great experience in academic and applied research. I participated in R&D projects with pharmaceutical industry partners, namely Vertex (“Complete CFTR gene mutation analysis in Portuguese patients with Cystic Fibrosis”) and Gilead (GÉNESE Programme, Ref. MED-2012-022, “Incidence of CFTR mutations in Individuals with Chronic Respiratory Diseases and their Effect in Disease Expression”), as part of my PhD, performing research activities, and preparing project reports for the pharmaceutical partners. The FCT financed project FCT/POCTI (Ref. PTDC/QEQ-SUP/4283/2014) and the CFF Cystic Fibrosis Foundation project (Ref. AMARAL15XX1) “RNA LIFE – Novel RNA Regulators as Potential Drug Targets for Cystic Fibrosis”, were two additional R&D projects with great relevance for my PhD. In 2019 I joined Escola Superior de Turismo e Tecnologia do Mar do Politécnico de Leiria, as an invited adjunct professor, teaching in the Marine Biology and Biotechnology course and in the Biotechnology course. I am currently responsible for 5 subjects in both components, theoretical and practical. Besides these, I teach 2 other subjects with colleagues from the same area.
