I am an Assistant Researcher (CEEC) from the Department of Biology&CESAM, University of Aveiro. I hold a BS degree in Marine Sciences from the University of Aegean, Greece (2007), a MSc in Toxicology and Ecotoxicology (2008) and a PhD in Marine Biology (2016, Summa Cum Laude), both degrees rewarded by the University of Aveiro. After my PhD, I obtained two project scholarships to continue with postdoctoral research on 1) the effects of emergent contaminants on zebrafish and daphnia found in groundwater samples and 2) to study biocaccumulation and toxicokinetics of NPs to terrestrial organisms. Up-to-date, I have produced 25 ISI papers, 1 magazine article and 1 book chapter. Additionally, I am the co-author of 4 conference proceedings papers and presented 43 communications at national and international meetings. I participate(d) in 15 national and international R&D projects, 3 ongoing. I am the Project Leader of the FCT project "VitroTox - Linking in vitro to in vivo toxicity of pharmaceuticals: An integrative approach" and Deputy PI of the EU-funded (HORIZON) project "ETERNAL - Boosting the reduction of the environmental impact of pharmaceutical products throughout their entire life cycle". I am currently the main supervisor of 1 PhD student focusing on the endocrine disruption of pharmaceuticals to aquatic organisms, 2 MSc students looking at 1) the effects of anticancer drugs on cells and 2) developing prediction models for anticancer drug assessment in the environment using machine learning techniques and also supervise 2 BS student within the VitroTox project. I am the co-supervisor of 2 PhD students focusing on 1) the effects of free and encapsulated anticancer biomolecules in zebrafish (ARISE) and 2) the mixture effects of NPs and anticancer drugs to zebrafish. I collaborated in the co-supervision of 2 PhD students, 1) focused on the toxicological effects of marine antineoplastics in zebrafish and 2) in unraveling the molecular mechanisms underlying the lifestyle-associated decline in human fertility. Within the EMPHASIS and VitroTox projects, I supervise(d) 5 research fellows working on the eco-, genotoxicity, bioaccumulation and metabolomics of anticancer compounds in zebrafish and zebrafish cell lines. I supervised 8 BS students studying the effects of emergent contaminants (NPs and antineoplastics) and their mixtures in zebrafish and cell lines and 6 MSc students focusing on the ecotoxicological effects of ENMs and anticancer agents in zebrafish, daphnias and nematodes; the mixture toxicity of emerging compounds (pharmaceuticals and PFAS) in aquatic organisms. I was part of the examination committee of 1 BS student and 1 PhD candidate for the conclusion of their degrees. Within the scientific community, I teach "Environmental Physiology" to undergrads, "Transferable Skills in Life Sciences" to MSc courses and (co-)organize and lecture the advanced course "How to work with Ecotox data" to postgraduates, annually. Up-to-date, I organised 1 seminar, participated in 10 jury committees for grant approvals and 3 award committees (SETAC), I guest-edited a SI in Bioaccumulation and Toxicokinetics (Toxics) and I am currently reviewing for 13 Scientific Journals. I am actively involved in outreach activities aimed at promoting public awareness and student's engagement and strengthening the relationship between Academia and Society through the dissemination of science to different publics, through school visits (giving lectures and/or practical classes), science fairs and forums or interviews, counting 8 different dissemination activities in the last five years. I also collaborate with different national and international Universities (e.g. University of Minho and FCT NOVA, PT; University of São Paulo and UNIFESP, BR; University of the Aegean, GR; Vrije University, NL; Birjand University of Medical Sciences, IR; ECETOC, Prague) and companies (e.g. Reij Jofre, ES; Astrazeneca, SE; AIMPLAS, ES; Angellini, IT).
