As molecular microbiologist, and head of the Lab of Molecular Microbiology of Bacterial Pathogens (MolMicro) at UCIBIO since 2015, I developed strong expertise in molecular biology, S. aureus mutant construction, transcriptomic and genomic approaches, protein-protein interactions, cell wall and membrane analysis. The MolMicro lab studies S. aureus mechanisms of antibiotic resistance, cell wall physiology, biofilm formation, interspecies and host-pathogen interactions. I am also assistant Professor since 2015 at FCT NOVA, responsible for the subjects ¿Methods in Molecular Biology¿, ¿Applied Microbiology¿ and ¿Biofilms in chronic infections¿ in which I lecture over 100 undergraduate and Msc students, yearly. After a degree in Biotechnology, I obtained my Ph.D. in Molecular Biology (ITQB-NOVA) in 2006. I was invited researcher at the Lab of Professor Alexander Tomasz, expert in S. aureus cell wall, at Rockefeller University (NY) from 2002 to 2007. I was twice (2011 and 2015) awarded a young investigator research grant by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious diseases (ESCMID). Since then, I was PI of 2 research grants and co-PI of 2 other, at National competitive calls and team member of over 10 financed projects. During the last decade I established collaborations with over 15 national and overseas research groups, in fundamental and complementary fields, and experts on S. aureus antibiotic resistance. All these collaborations are ongoing, some already resulted in published works and most in co-supervision of PhD or Msc students. I supervised 3 post-docs, 11 PhD Theses (5 ongoing), 27 Msc Theses (4 ongoing), 7 visiting students (COST, H2020 RISE, Erasmus) and over 40 undergraduates. I published 40 peer-reviewed papers (h-index:17, scopus; 20 Scholars), some in high impact journals (Nat Microbiol, PLOS Path, PLOS Gen, AAC,), 8 conference proceedings, over 40 oral and 60 poster communications. I am currently Academic Editor for PLOS One and evaluator of Research Grants and Post-doctoral fellowships for the Swiss National Foundation (SNF).
