Hanna Pieta is assistant professor at NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities (Lisbon, Portugal), where she lectures on audiovisual and scientific translation. She is also Associate Editor of the Scopus-indexed Anglo Saxonica journal. Before taking up her current position, she was head of Research Group on Reception and Translation Studies (at the University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies). With interests in machine translation literacy, pivot (indirect) translation, centre-periphery relations, translator training and open-science, she has published over forty research outputs in leading publishers (Benjamins, Routledge) and journals (Target, The Interpreter and Translator Trainer, The Translator, Translation Studies, Perspectives, Translation Spaces). Hanna has recently contributed chapters to the Handbook of Translation Studies (2021), and the Routledge Hanbook of the History of Translation Studies (2024), Routledge Handbook of Translation an Migration (2024) and co-authored a book titled Indirect Translation Explained (Routledge, 2022). Hanna has currently guest-edited a special issue of Perspectives on Indirect Literary Translation (2023) and Indirect Audiovisual Translation (2024) and a special issue of Translation Spaces (2023) on Indirect Translation and Sustainability. She has published in top journals and publishers in the fields of Translation Studies and Iberian-Slavonic Studies. She is also the co-founder and co-coordinator an international network of researchers working on indirect translation, which aims to deliver a greater depth of partnership and academic collaboration across Europe. Since 2008, she has been the recipient of nine (inter)national research grants at MA, doctoral and post-doctoral level (awarded by FCT, Fundação Gulbenkian, Universidade NOVA, NOVA FCSH, Instituto Camões, CETRA, EST). She regularly acts as an evaluator for national research funding in Belgium (FWO), Ireland (Irish Research Council) and Poland (Fundacja na Rzecz Nauki Polskiej). She has served on the editorial boards of two specialist journals (Anglo-Saxonica and Translation Matters), on the executive committees of one scholarly associations (EST Glossary Committee) and on the jury of twe international award (YERUN Open Science and Travel Awards). She has acted as a peer-reviewer for major journals in the field of Translation Studies (Target, Perspectives, Meta, TTR, Translation Studies, The Translator) and international publishers (Routledge, Benjamins, Bloomsbury) and supervised several BA and MA projects to successful completion. Hanna maintains close links with non-academic translation stakeholders (embassies, healthcare centres, public administration bodies) as a consultant, but also via her research which she developed in collaboration with different organizations beyond the academia. At the moment, Hanna is particularly interested in developing research-based training advice to help improve the quality of indirect translations (with a focus on translations of audivisual products), and raise awareness of the scope, relevance and challenges of indirect translation among translation educators, professionals and lay users. Hanna maintains a continued research interest in collaborative practices and open-science, and in particular the way in which they shape the field of Translations Studies.
