Andrei Kavaleuski (Kovalevsky) (AK) is a tenured Principal Researcher at CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials / DEMaC, University of Aveiro, Portugal. He is a coordinator of CICECO´s research line “Energy”, and a representative of the University of Aveiro in the Sustainable Energy sector within the CRUSOE network (South-West Europe macro-region) on the topic “Next Generation Materials”. After completing his PhD in Physical Chemistry in 2002, he was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Aveiro (Portugal) and Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO, Belgium), focusing on materials for ceramic oxygen-permeable membranes and SOFC. These efforts are continued in his present research group, together with the R&D activities in thermoelectric conversion, green steelmaking, design of cost-effective and highly active electrocatalysts for hydrogen and oxygen evolution and engineering of porous ceramics for catalytic and separation applications. AK co-authored ~180 SCI papers (h-index of 37 and ~5100 citations (Scopus), h-index of 41 with ~6600 citations (Google Scholar)). He contributed to 5 book chapters and participated in more than 30 R&D projects, supported by European Commission and national funding agencies. In the last 5 years, he coordinated 5 R&D projects (3 national: 2 as PI and 1 as a co-PI and 2 European: as a coordinator and as a local PI) with total funding of ~1 M€. From 2019 to 2024, AK showcased the accomplishments of his research group in 17 keynote and invited talks at primarily international conferences and workshops. Currently, AK´s research group includes 2 post-doctoral researchers and 5 PhD students. In 2019-2023, 2 PhD and 6 MSc theses under his (co)supervision were defended. In 2020, an MSc thesis under his supervision was awarded the 1st Prize for best Master's thesis of the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 academic years in Materials Science and Engineering by the Portuguese Materials Society. AK contributes to the educational process at the University of Aveiro by teaching theoretical and theoretical-practical courses within 1st cycle (as co-lecturer) and Master degree in Materials Engineering (as coordinator). AK is an active referee for ~ 80 SCI journals, including contributions to Chemical Society Reviews, Advanced Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, Nano Energy, Chemistry of Materials and Journal of Materials Chemistry A. In 2019, he was awarded by Publons as a top peer reviewer 2019 in cross-field. In 2020-2022, according to the updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators (Stanford University, doi: 10.17632/btchxktzyw.3, doi: 10.17632/btchxktzyw.5 and doi: 10.17632/btchxktzyw.6) AK was among the top 2% most cited researchers in the world. AK serves/ed as an Editorial Board member for Springer Nature Applied Sciences, Solids (MDPI), PhysChem (MDPI), participates in the Advisory board of the Heliyon journal (Cell Press) and reviews books for Elsevier. AK regularly contributes to the evaluation (referee and/or a member of evaluation panel) of the project proposals for the M-ERA.NET, Research Council of Norway, ACS Petroleum Research Fund, Israel Science Foundation, National Science Centre (Poland), Technology Agency of the Czech Republic, Slovak Academy of Sciences, German Research Foundation (DFG) and National Innovation Agency (ANI, Portugal). AK have been involved as a member of the organisation committee at 19th Meeting of the Portuguese Electrochemical Society (2014), CICECO Jornadas (2019) and acted as a Convener of a dedicated symposium on TE materials at the prestigious CIMTEC conference (2022). In 2024, he will be a co-chair of a dedicated symposium on thermoelectrics at EMRS 2024 Spring Meeting. AK is a co-inventor in two EPO patent applications filed. He is actively engaged in promoting science to various audiences, emphasising its societal relevance.
