Ph.D (1997) Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway. Postdoctoral studies at the Research Institute for Plant Protection, DLO, Wageningen, The Netherlands (2 years), and the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, Harvard University, Cambridge, USA (3 years). Sabbatical stay at the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary biology, Yale University, New Haven, in 2011. Tenured faculty in the Department of Pharmacy, the University of Tromsø, and full professor since 2005. Leader of the research group on microbiology, molecular- and pharmacoepidemiology 2009-2014. Head of Department of Life Science and Health, Oslo Metropolitan University, Oslo, Sept 2014-April 2020. Vice-dean of Innovation, Faculty of health sciences, OsloMet (April 2020-). Research focus is on understanding how bacteria utilize horizontally transferred foreign DNA (Thomas and Nielsen, 2005, Nature Rev. Microbiol 3, 711-21), and the factors that regulate genetic recombination process in natural environments (Nielsen and Townsend, 2004, Nature Biotechnol. 22, 1110-4, Overballe-Pettersen et al. 2013. PNAS 49, 19860-65) and probe the stringency of barriers towards interspecies transfers of antimicrobial resistance determinants (Ray et al. 2009, Genetics, 182, 1165-81); including those residing on mobile genetic elements (Domingues et al., 2012, PLoS Pathogens 8, e1002837, Starikova et al., 2012, PLoS Pathogens 8: e10030439. We also seek to better understand the fate of HGT events in bacterial populations over time (Townsend et al., 2012. Front. Microbiol. 3, 27., Nielsen et al. 2014. Front. Microbiol. 4, 415). The research group in Tromsø hosted visiting researchers from Austria, Germany, USA, Italy, Taiwan, Turkey, India, Portugal, Denmark, UK, Russia, and New Zealand and was evaluated as ¿excellent¿ by the Research Council of Norway (NFR) in 2006 (ISBN82-12-02383-4). An additional research interest has been the potential for unintended horizontal dissemination of antibiotic resistance marker genes used in GMOs and their broader societal impact (Nielsen, 2013, PloS Biology 11, e1001499). As part of the latter research I have participated in biosafety capacity building activities in all regions of the world, including Genok, FAO and WHO organized events. I was an advisor to Genok-Center for Biosafety (www.genok.org) until 2017, and have been a member of the GMO Panel of the Norwegian Food Safety Committee 2007-2017 (www.vkm.no). Am since 2018 a member of the Microbial ecology panel. Appointed expert member of the GMO panel of the European Food Safety Authority 2009-2015 (www.efsa.eu). Since 2000, I have been invited for oral presentations all over the world. Finally, I have contributed extensively with peer review services of scientists, publications and proposals, including services for research councils in France, Germany, Italy, Poland, UK, USA, and the ERC, Europe. For the latter I was the chair of one of the StG LS9 panels.
