I am engaged in investigating natural photonic nanostructures, with a focus on dielectric silicon dioxide structures formed by diatoms. Currently, I serve as the principal investigator of the NASCADIA project (FCT), where we explore the tuning of photonic properties in girdle bands. Our research extends to their application in sensing as nanophotonic platforms and energy harvesting. Additionally, I have contributed significantly to the field, serving as the lead editor for a Wiley book on Diatom Photosynthesis, co-editor for a special issue on Photonics in Nature: From Living Organisms to Bioinspiration in Frontiers of Physics, and review editor in Frontiers in Photobiology. Our research findings have garnered attention and have been published in reputable journals such as Advanced Science, New Phytologist, and ISME. I have authored a total of 20 publications, including book chapters. In recognition of my contributions, I have been awarded prestigious research grants, including the Marie Curie Fellowship from the European Research Council and a CEEC from the FCT.
