Micael Gonçalves (MGonçalves) is a PhD Researcher and Invited Assistant Professor at the University of Aveiro (UA) and the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP). As a microbiologist, he explores the biotechnological potential of fungi at the intersection of marine biotechnology in sustainable agriculture. He graduated in Biology (2014), earned an MSc in Molecular and Cellular Biology (2016), and completed a PhD in Microbiology (2022) at UA in collaboration with the University of Ghent, where he conducted research at the Bioinformatics and Evolutionary Genomics Group. He was a postdoctoral fellow at CINTESIS-UP (1.5 years) and CESAM-UA (1.5 years) before securing a Junior Researcher contract at CESAM-UA in 2025 through the highly competitive CEEC-2022 Individual call by the National Science Foundation (FCT). MGonçalves has led groundbreaking discoveries, identifying 40+ new fungal species and 3 novel genera. He has been a pioneer in multi-omics approaches to unravel fungal biology. As a team member or researcher in 6 R&D-funded projects (2 EU and 4 FCT), MGonçalves has helped secure €2M in research funding, collaborating with leading scientists and industry partners. Author of 40 publications, with +300 different authors in high-impact journals, along with 1 book chapter, 2 encyclopedia entries, and a patentable technology. The international visibility of MGonçalves' work is supported by the well-deserved recognition of the Portuguese Society of Microbiology (SPM), and over 1,000 citations and an h-index of 17 (Scopus). Beyond research, MGonçalves is committed to mentorship and education, supervising 5 BSc (2 ongoing), 5 MSc (1 ongoing), and 1 PhD (ongoing) students, as well as mentoring interns and research fellows. As an Invited Assistant Professor since 2022, MGonçalves taught 9 curricular units across 8 bachelor's and 5 master's degree programs. A proactive science communicator, he engages in public outreach through television programs, exhibitions, and high school lectures, bringing microbiology closer to society.
