paula roush is an artist, researcher, and founder of msdm [mobile strategies of display & mediation], a collective platform that explores the fluid entanglements of art, curatorial, and publishing practices. Through place-based research, viewed through the lens of hydrofeminist 'new materialisms' and a decolonial perspective, paula investigates emerging technologies and relational methodologies. The aim is to develop a narrative of transitional design leading towards a more equitable and ecologically just future. Their most recent projects 'Follow Y/Our River', 'Liquid Memories', and 'House-Studio-Gallery' offer pluriversal viewpoints and introduce 'wateryquery', a unique approach to inquiry with water that bridges conceptual formulation with intuition, feeling, and care. These projects have recently been showcased at venues including the Water Museum in Lisbon, Portugal (2023), the Borough Rd Gallery in London, UK (2023) and the Isabel Bader Centre in Kingston, CA (2022). paula teaches at the London South Bank University , where they hold the position of Senior Lecturer at the School of Arts and Creative Industries and are also a member of the Centre for the Study of the Networked Image. Their academic research has been focused on the ecological mobility of the book, the automation of photobook publishing as artistic strategy and is part of the Library of Artistic Print On Demand platform and the forthcoming book, Library of Artistic Print On Demand: Post-Digital Publishing in Times of Platform Capitalism. Currently, paula is involved in two AI projects. The learning lab 'AI Disruption: Artistic Inscriptions in AI-Invoked Photobook Publishing,' organized in collaboration with Photobook Week Aarhus, explores the impact of AI on the realm of art publishing. Another is an investigation into the origins of the judicial portrait and its connection to the contemporary application of AI in extensive identification training datasets. paula has been awarded a United States Fulbright Research Award. Additional support includes fellowships and residencies from the Bauhaus Kolleg at the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, the Arab Image Foundation, the Frans Masereel Centrum, as well as funding for projects from the Arts Council England, the Gulbenkian Foundation, and Instituto Camões. *NOTE: artistic name is intentionally written in all lowercase font.
