Pedro Miguel Mendes Araújo

I am currently a researcher at MARE - Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre of University of Coimbra . I am an ecologist with deep interest in dynamics of migratory populations, and its role for the conservation of compositional, structural and functional biodiversity. My model systems are avian migrants, and I realized soon that studying bird migration requires good international links, as species span over large geographical ranges, as well as, access to novel technologies that allow movements to be tracked, in combination with eco-physiological parameters. I obtained my doctoral degree in Ecology in 2015 by the University of Coimbra. Before my PhD I worked several years as a freelancer in environmental assessment, until I was awarded with a MSc scholarship in a large international project on duck migration. During those years I learned a lot and established long-lasting collaborations with a network of top researchers from Iceland, United Kingdom, Spain and Portugal. Since 2015 I have published 23 ISI papers, of which 21 in the 1st quartile ecology journals and 8 in Top multidisciplinary journals. I highlight the contributions where myself and colleagues unravelled the profile and synthesis rates method using deuterated water on birds (Sci Rep and JEB), the environmental factors affecting migration (Zoology), sampling fat in migratory birds (J Field Ornithol), and developed captivity experiments to address migratory and genetic questions (SCIENCE, Plos Genetics, Mol Biol Evol, Curr Biol, PNAS and P R Soc B). These last publications, attracted nearly 200 citations only in last two years, resulting in a rapidly growing h-index of 9. I have presented 23 oral presentations in 10 large conferences (EOU, WOC, BOU, ENE, E-SOVE), and organized 4 workshops on biological sampling in wild birds.
