Celia Gomes is a group leader at the Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research - Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra and a member of the research consortium Centre for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB) of the University of Coimbra. During her Ph.D she spent two years at the Departments of Pathology and Radiology-Division of Nuclear Medicine at the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC), Leiden, Netherlands. She is a cancer researcher with a special interest in cancer stem cells, more specifically in elucidating the molecular mechanism underlying their contribution to tumor progression and therapy resistance, with the ultimate goal of identifying druggable targets. More recently, she became interested in exploring the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in metastatic dissemination, namely those related to premetastatic niche formation. Given the recognized role of exosomes in metastatic organotropism, she is also interested in exploring their usage as theranostic nanoplatforms for the diagnosis and treatment of lung metastasis. She has been deeply involved in post-graduation activities at FMUC, namely in the Master in Biomedical Research, being in charge of the Oncobiology area. Her scientific research has resulted in over 70 publications in peer-reviewed international journals and 3 book chapters, having over 1800 citations and an H-index of 26 (source: WoS). She participates and/or participated as principal investigator in 8 projects and researcher in 12 projects funded by National and International agencies. She has supervised 4 PhD thesis (+ 7 ongoing) and 19 Master Thesis and research fellows. CG received 8 awards and/or honors and has been acting as an evaluator for several scientific national and international institutions.
