Gisela Doria Sirimarco

I am a choreographer, researcher, educator, and dancer with an academic and professional background in performing arts. I earned my first degree from the Royal Academy of Dance College in London in 1991 and later obtained a Bachelor's degree in Journalism from Universidade Católica Dom Bosco. In 2009, I completed a Master's degree in Performing Arts from the School of Communication and Arts at Universidade de São Paulo(USP), Brazil, followed by a Ph.D. in Performing Arts from the Institute of Arts at Unicamp. My doctoral research included a stage at Université Paris 8 under Professor Isabelle Launay, funded by Capes in 2015. My postdoctoral work includes a first degree from USP (2017) and a second from the University of Lisbon (2018-2020), where I explored the concept of Choreographic Haikus. In 2023, I served as a Visiting Professor at Programa de Pós Graduação em Artes Cênicas at the Federal University of Bahia-UFBA, supported by a Capes Print scholarship. Currently, I am a fellow researcher at the Centro de Estudo de Teatro (CET) at the University of Lisbon and a collaborator with Forum Dança, Lisboa. I have published two books, "The Poetics of Nowhere: Towards Theatricality in Dance" (2013) and "Cia Carne Agonizante - Sem tempo para ter medo" (2018). In 2017, I co-convened the "Choreography and Corporeality" Working Group at IFTR. As a dance artist, I have collaborated with numerous groups and companies in Brazil such as Ginga Cia de Dança, Dançaurbana, Cia Fragmento, and Performa Teatro. In dance education, I founded and managed the Duo School of Dance in Campo Grande, MS, for over 24 years. I also coordinated movement classes at Casa de Ensaio, a non-profit organization focused on arts education for children and youth from low-income backgrounds, for over a decade. I am a certified Pilates Instructor (since 2008) with specializations from CGPA/SP and the Kane School in New York, a Gyrokinesis® Instructor (since 2020), and a certified Klein Technique Teacher (2024). I am an active member of various dance and performing arts organizations, including the Dance Studies Association (DSA), International Federation for Theatre Research (IFTR), and EASTAP. I continue to contribute to the dance community, particularly in contemporary dance, somatic practices, performance, and dance history.
